I discovered a lump in the back of my neck. Was refered to an ENT. She did a CT scan and needle aspiration that showed SCC. I had a PET scan that shows only the mass in the lump in my neck. I am scheduled for surgery on March 29th. She will do many biopsys and then a neck disection. Have been afraid, becoming more positive with the more I learn. This was such a shock to me since I have always taken care of myself. I've never smoked, I dont drink alcohol, I've been a vegetarian for 10 yrs and a Vegan for 2. I guess until I have the surgery and biopsys I dont know what else I am going to have to have done.

I would NOT, given what you just posted, NOT let anyone cut on me UNTIL I got a second opinion from a CCC.

In many, if not most, of these cases you may very well avoid surgery and since your cancer did not originate in your node the Primary should be located and treated as advised by OC specialists like you will surely find at a CCC.

Mary, do as they say and get that 2nd opinion. CCC is the best place to head for. Call yourself if you have to. I did and they got me right in at Ohio State James CCC within a very few days.

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

Hi Mary,

I don't know what part of California you live but if you live in Southern California, I highly recommend you go to UCLA. They are an excellent CCC. I have been so impressed with the way they treat my husband Ron. Best of luck and keep us updated.
