I got a message from Jim yesterday. Unfortunately its bad news. Jim does have cancer again. He wrote its in his jaw bone and tongue.

The operation would remove his jaw and tongue. The jaw will be rebuilt with a piece of his leg bone. Its aprox a 15 hour operation. There are not any guarantees it will work, it might only give him more misery. He also said, he learned that we never get ready for the words that we might die.

He said the doctor from Friday told him his original doc messed up since he didnt give him chemo and radiation following his surgery. The new doc gives him straight info that he can understand. He is still processing all the info. His daughter was with him for the doctor visit. Jim goes back on the 24th for another consultation.

Thanks Christine.

Jim,
I am so sorry. I am at a loss for what to say right now. I can't believe you were able to talk to me on the phone for close to 15 minutes the other night! I am hoping with all that determination you showed in being able to do so, will also hold strong for this next hurdle.
Sending all the love and strength I can to you. Stay strong Jim.

With prayers and blessings to you and everyone on this board.

Donna

Thanks for posting information on Jim, Christine. It's just not fair for him to be going through all the pain and disappointment he has now. I haven't been on the forum very long, but right away I realized how important and loved he is to everyone, and how he jumps right in there to help others with their problems. All I can do is send my heartfelt hope and prayers, and ask that you pass them along to him and keep us informed. It makes me sick to my stomach to hear news like this, as I'm sure it does to all who admire and love him. May the good Lord be with him and ease his pain and help him survive.

Wow, Christine thank you so much for updating us on Jim's condition, although not what I was wanting to hear. I really don't know what to say. I just feel so sad. This cancer sucks! I will continue to keep Jim in my thoughts and prayers.

I hate this cancer so very much. Hang in there Jim-you are an inspiration to so many people. I'm just so sorry you have to endure so much pain and suffering. Neil had that surgery with the leg bone replacing the jawbone that was removed so if you have any questions-I can help.

Jim,
I am so sad that you are having such a difficult time. There are a lot of us out there who read your posts and even though we don't always reply, you've made us laugh. That is a gift, to be able to help others find the humor in the most unlikely situations. Thank you for your responses and thoughtful entries. I wish you did not have to be in such pain.

All the best--

Jim, as you probably know I have been MIA for a while and your thread was the first one I locked into. I am so sorry that this "bastard of a disease" (as Danny Boy would have put it) has struck you again. I know that you will fight it with all you've got.

It serves as a reminder how fragile life is and how we must make the best of everyday. You have raised the bar and set an example in the this area that we can only hope to aspire to. My prayers are with you for a successful outcome.

Thank you all for the big needle of confidence you have given me. I think right now, people that that we deal with everyday are more important than meds.At least mentally they are. I am going to my daughters today to just get away and to play with and tease the kids of all ages. LOL As long as one doesn't DECK me. I put my house up for sale yesterday and I hope it sells fast even if I have to take a butt whippin on it. I will either buy another where I am from, close to my family, rent one or move in with my daughter as she wants. I want everything as easy as possible for all of them to see me when they want or to go to school functions with. I called my granddaughters yesterday evening and my ex answered. We talked for about a half hour and it relaxed me some. I guess we should have never married but remained friends. I love my ladies in our forums too.. Have a great day all. EzJim the dipstick signing off for now.

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

Jim, its nice to see a post from you.

It sounds like a great idea to live with your daughter. This surgery isnt easy and you will need help when you come home. Even as independant and active as you are, you still will need help.

Hope you had a great day with your grandchildren smile

So sorry to read about Jim's diagnosis. I have had this surgery. My jaw bone was replaced a piece of bone from my leg. The surgery was very successful. It is a long surgery, but you are not award of the passing time. It seems like an eternity for your family awaiting the results and completion of the surgery. The recovery time for me was about three weeks in the hospital. The surgery wasn't as bad as it sounds. It can be done with positive results. My surgery was seven years ago and no reoccurence. The most important thing is your positive attitude, which I gather from reading your posts that you have. It will be over soon and I wish you a quick recovery.

Jim,
I just signed on now and an update on you was the first thing I looked for. I'm sorry the news is so grim, but hopefully this surgery will leave you cancer free. What truly makes me mad is that your other doctors missed this despite all your complaints about pain and other problems.

You said you are also having a glossectomy. Will that be a total or partial? Or won't they know until they get in there?

If anyone can beat this, it is you. Hang in there Tiger! Your angels are watching. Sending good vibes your way.

Take care,
Eileen

Jim,platu. I had a segmental mandibulectomy. I knew I was on here for something. Don't even worry. I was odd man out because I was one of few that my jawbone replacement/plastic surgery did not take. They thought it was disastrous and now I look not so awful bad and can eat and talk and still turn a couple heads(when they look at the other profile) HAHA. I thought my life was over and still I have a lot to cope with but I am working full time and
even though I had to learn to swallow again and chew differently,
I am doing it. I am the only one I know that jaw surgery and replacement with a bone from elsewhere did not take and look how
I am making it work out.

You are going to be fine and make me jealous because your reconstrution will work. Just ask Malka. I am the outsider here
and I am OK.

You always make it Jim. I love you because you are so strong-
you can be stronger than me!!!!!!!!!!
Take heart.
Love
Debbie

Partial mandibulectomy and neck dissection 2/3/07. T2NOMO.

Hi everyone. I talked to my brother, yesterday. I asked him how he was feeling and he said, "horrible". He has his house up for sale and has consented to move in with his daughter. We have also told him whatever he decides to do, we are 100% with him. He's waiting to see what the MRI will show when he has it done in Morgantown, WVA,next Tuesday. Sorry I haven't posted lately. There's just a lot of stuff going on with him and in our home also. We and Jim just have to keep our eyes on God and not the cancer. I hate that word. It's what took our mother. Only the cancer she had spread all through her body and went into her bones. So, as soon as I hear anything, I'll let you all know. Love to all of you, Carol

Jim, i hadn't been here for a while. I was shocked to hear it was back. I am sending my prayers and wishes from across the pond. I do enjoy your funny wise and down to earth posts, actually your wise words often kicked me back into gear. I read you are going to move with your daughter. That sounds good. Family are so important. And you have the kiddies to distract you as well.
keep us updated I wish you all the best.

Jim,

Since finding this site, I quickly identified you as one of my heroes. I'll tell you that this surgery is tough, I did have my jaw replaced with my fibula and also had flap done with tissue from around my fibula. It changes some things but all in all I'll say it's not so bad....much better then the alternative.

Stay strong my friend, my heart goes out to you. Use your strength and stubborness to beat this shit into submission my friend.

Your friend and fellow Frack!

Jim, I agree. The kids will be a great source of distraction and hopefully will give you a few laughs. I hope your pain is under control and they are staying on top of that.
I always looked forward to reading your posts, your wit intertwined with your bits of advice always gave me a good laugh.
Thank you! Sorry you have to go through this after all you've been through.

Well, tomorrow is the day for the MRI and hopefully to ASK a lot of questions and get some answers, My youngest son is going with me and if nothing erlse, LOL , his size should raise some awareness with these Drs. This is the one that is into World's strongest Mans Competions. My hardest job lately has been getting food into this large cavity called a mouth and then swallowing it with plenty of water and soft butter. I am back down to the high 150s in weight and do my best to keep food going in to raise the weight. I am sorry I don't post much, but when I sit, for some reason the skin tightens over my eyes and pulls them closed. Next thing I know the time has changed. I hope everyone here feels better and that everyone of us whip this garbage. Keep em guessing will ya?? {^^}

Hi, Jim -

I hope you're able to get some rest and relief from the pain. As far as the MRI - I don't expect you to get the results immediately. You have a lot to deal with, & I know you will update us when you can.

I'm praying for you.

I just wish that before this week is gone for good, that somoeone at some Hospital in WVa comes up with a schedule for the MRI to be done. But I will say, this waiting has gotten me back on the road to the crazy, could care less Jim that I was before. I even feel more like that guy that wore my shoes before and loved to laugh and enjoy fun. I am just about to make my own diagnosis and it will be " CURED". I already quit taking most of the meds just to feel half normal, LOL, whatever that might be. Have a good day all, and if I hear anything I will post it. But for now, back to normal for this guy.

Here it is Wed and no word yet about the MRI. Damn these people can raise the BP a few notches. I was waiting and hoping I could post something, but as you can see, nothing is happening yet. Maybe the Dr is upset that I told him if nothing shows on the MRI to just leave me alone. He wants to go ahead with surgery anyhow. Not on me he won't.

Nancy, they did call this afternoon and now he wants my daughter to call him Monday from work. The big holdup was one of them worrying that I might have metal in my arteriers from the aneurysm. Geez, I have had at least 3 MRI since then. LOL Biut he wanted the proof from the other Hospitals.

Sigh ... wait and wait and wait some more. It drives me nuts. I'm rooting for you, Jim - you are like the Energizer Bunny - or an ornery coot - & I mean that in the nicest way:o)

Hope your weekend is quiet.

Marlene

Marginal mandibulectomy 6/17/08 resulted in DX of Stage I SCC - gingiva (3 mm) right mandible, buccal side. Clear margins. Occasional social drinker. Smoked last cigarette in 1979. Clear pet: 12/08; 7/20/09. Yay!

So sorry to see you have to go through more stuff. It's good to see
how positive you are, you are a strong man!

Sometimes they are too careful and the rest not careful enough!!!!!! I hope you get your heart in check, I sure can
see how it would be stressed out!

Thinking of you...

EZJim

Wow, what an unnecessary hassle you have to endure. I hope this all gets straightened out Monday. I don't think the doctors truly understand whom they are messing with when they mess with you. Keep the faith brother
