| Patient Advocate (old timer, 2000 posts) Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 3,552 | The doctors lied! The worst is right now and for several weeks post treatment. I was sick a lot during this time. Was it the radiation? I don't know. There were many things that can cause it. Zofran is mainly effective in the first 4 days, then you need something else, like compazine. Nausea is a standard side effect of this treatment. In my case the meds lost most of their effectiveness as time went on (they're not 100% effective to begin with). Zofran, I believe is only 60% effective.
I lost over 60 lbs -went from 170 to 109! I have gained back 18 lbs. and average about 2 lbs per week.
I know its hard to watch a loved one go through this. My wife was pretty freaked out. The body is much more resilient than you realize. 5 months ago I didn't think I was going to live through this and today I am playing bass in a band and doing landscape maintenance.
Depression is normal for a cancer patient at this phase. The doctors were preparing you to watch for it since you are your mothers advocate.
