URGENT. Tomorrow there is an opportunity for an oral cancer survivor to appear on NY TV channel 4, NBC-TV to speak about oral cancer and the importance of early detection and diagnosis. The individual will be interviewed by Dr. Max Gomez on national TV. The taping will be Wednesday April 9 at approximately 10AM, at the NYU College of Dentistry. We really need to get one of us out there to spread the word. I know it is short notice. But hopefully someone will respond to this post in time. Interested parties should call (212) 998-9910 and speak with Elyse Bloom. If you are within traveling distance of New York City, please consider this.

I responded to the TV request for an oral cancer survivor to be interviewed. I have mixed feelings about it. Anything you want me to say to the world besides my experience ,strength and hope?

Oh ya show them your good side too wink

Mark, 21 Year survivor, SCC right tonsil, 3 nodes positive, one with extra-capsular spread. I never asked what stage (would have scared me anyway) Right side tonsillectomy, radical neck dissection right side, maximum radiation to both sides, no chemo, no PEG, age 40 when diagnosed.

Hi Robert:

It's Kim (kcdc) coming in under Dave's screen name. Thanks for being willing to make the hike to get the word out on behalf of all of us. With the way the Big Dig is here, it could take months to get to NY from Boston!

All kidding aside, I think make sure to hit on the decreased age of incidence in the general population coupled with cases in the average Joe who seems to have no risk factors such as smoking, using snuff, or excess alcohol. I think most people "tune out" when they hear about cancer unless the suprise AKA "It can happen to you too" factor is brought home.

Brian-This channel also has a local Boston affiliate. Will the broadcast be national or can we also lobby to have the affiliates run similar stories? Would be willing to follow-up at this end if it's an option.

Good luck with your TV debut-I'm sure you'll make us proud!

Kim

Please read my editorial on the issues. It covers some important points. You will probably get a sound bite or two. **Early detection saves lives. **There is an increasing incidence of younger ( people in their 30's and 40's) non smokers who have none of the risk factors getting this disease. **When a dentist incorporates a properly done oral cancer examination as part of his regular patient check ups, he can save lives. ** More often than not, this cancer is not found in its early stages, this makes it a very dangerous disease with less than 50% of the 30,000 diagnosed people each year surviving more than 5 years. Brian\'s comments on the problems link

And of course a plug for OCF would be stellar!!!
