Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 128 | My plan is to stop work on 6/16/2009. I just want to make that date. It is a control issue for me over this damn cancer! Then, I am ready to give in/up for a few weeks of full recovery. Does that sound realistic, or am I still living partly in the state of denial?

How long do you plan taking off. Would it work for you to just take a week or long weekend when you need it to give your voice a rest? Most people say the condition it doesn't last long.
You're still not finished radiation, 4 more to go. Don't you want to wait until after you're finished which I understand it's the darkest before the dawn.
Just wondering?

Sandy 56, BOT SCC Biopsy 1/21/09 Stage 3, T3NXM0.
Finished 3 cycle induction chemotherapy 4/7/09. (Chisplatin, 5-fu and Texotere). Re-staged 4/20/09,(very successful.) Will start Carboplatin/radiation 2 Gy/5 days/7 weeks (Tomotherapy) starting May 4th. Finished 6/22/09.

Yes I lost my voice for about two weeks right near the 6th week of Radiation after having sailed through the first five. As to your newest question: HOPE is fine and fixed dates are a good goal. It "sounds" realistic but you may need longer to recover if your reality is like the posts in the Medications, Procedures, Treatments forum under the thread: Working Thru Radiation. Go for it, it's less than two weeks away.

You will know when it's time, believe me this is not like the flu. This Tx is barbaric and cruel and unusual but most of the time it is effective and without it we die.

Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

I plan to go off on 6/16/2009 and stay out through the entire month of July. I hope that will be enough time to get back moving again. I know from what I've read here that I won't be normal in that short period. Just hoping I can be functional again by the end of July.

Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 8,311 | Along with loosing my voice came what I'll call lockjaw as it seems like my jaw muscles had tightened so much it was difficult to open my mouth. That lasted longer than loosing my voice and yawning helped a lot because I could control how far I opened my mouth but it "fired" those muscles which helped me recover sooner I think.

Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 147 | I lost my voice about the last two weeks of rad. It came back in about 1 week - weak at first but recovered completely. Survived with note pad, bicycle horn for family and emails to clients.
DX 2/10/09; Stage 1 SCC side of tongue; Partial Gloss; PEG in 3/3/09; 3 Cisplatin; 35 IMRT; PEG out 7/17/09; Eating via mouth and walking 3 miles/day 4 wks after treatment end. 50 pound weight loss; Clear PET 09/09 and 09/10

Tx 6/18 - 8/3/07, IMRT x 33 Cisplatin x3 (stopped after 1st dose due to hearing issues). Weekly Erbitux started 6/27/07 completed 8/6/07.
