After I wake up, my jaw and mouth hurt SO bad, but a little while later, after water, mouth, tongue and jaw exercise, it seems to be better. Is this normal? If anyone knows what normal is that is!

I don't know if it's they way he sleeps, but he gets jaw pain in the morning quite often. As for the dry mouth it really depends wether he is having a dry week or not. I know his throat is always dry in the morning though. Anyway, it doesn't seem to bother the doctors (then again nothing seems to bother them). If it's any consolation you Martin is the same.

As a cancer patient, never overlook things even if they seem trivial.
I also had a very sore jaw for a long time, after doing HBO it didnt hurt anymore. No idea why it hurt or how it stopped, just glad it isnt sore anymore. Keep doing the stretching exercises so it doesnt tighten up on you. It doesn't quit hurting but feels better.

You must be in your third week--are you experiencing a lot of irritation/sores/mouth and throat pain? He hasn't gotten a PEG tube yet; RO says he'll need one but everyone has an opinion and John wants to wait as long as possible so he can continue exercising, etc to keep strong.
GM, for John who has SCC Rt tonsil with 3+ nodes, Stage T1 N2b MX; surgery 04/09; Rad X 33 completed 7/14/09...f/u imaging and scopes looking good as of Feb 2011

He got thrush as well and his gums and tongue were covered in what looked like white moss. It went away with antibiotics. Make sure John eats as much as he can while he can, and tell him not to wait too long if he has trouble swallowing and eating. He can still do stuff with a PEG (we moved house while he still had the PEG). It will just stop him loosing weight, and weight lost seems really hard to gain again. Best wishes Cecilia

Our chief consultant decided to send martin for an X-Ray particularly the left jaw bit underneath the ,olars where it hurts the most. he wants to check for infection or bone damage caused by radiation. He called a collegue in to look at a patch in the mouth, but the other man said it was like a callous skin in the mouth were the food rubs, it's in a gap where a tooth is missing. Apparently nothing serius. anyway, I'll update in what they say after the scan.
