I had my first day of chemo today without incident. I believe the anti-nausea medications have given me a chronic case of the hic-ups. Has anyone else had to deal with this. I know it seems minor compared to most problems. I sure would like be able to get some rest though.
Your help is appreciated.

This happened to my husband, and the nurses told him it is fairly common reaction. He was put on baclofen, and that did seem to help control them somewhat. It does seem like it should be a minor inconvenience, but I remember that it drove my husband bonkers. Good luck!

Gary,

Bill had terrible hiccups....just awful convulsive ones that drove him nuts.

After his second chemo, they started and when they recurred on the third chemo, we asked the doc about it. He prescribed Reglan and believe or not, Thorazine. They definitely helped so Bill would take them a couple of days before and after his treatments. No more hiccups.

So you are not alone...

Gary, That is one of the side effects of cisplatin. I don't know if that is the chemo drug you are on, but I am and have had a couple of episodes of hickups and expecially if I am not sitting up correctly when I drink something. And I drink though a straw so that may add to it also. Call your Dr. office and maybe they can send you something out before the week-end. Good luck, Angel

Deb and others that wrote in. Thank you. My Dr. did give me Regian. I took one and behold an hour and a half later it gave me an hour with no hiccups. Now they are back. I called again and the on call Doc. said hiccups are a normal side effect. My have been ongoing for a day and a half. He is now calling in a RX for Thorazine. I guess if I am schizophrenia it will help that also.
It is great to have you all helping.
Blessing

hi gary, are you taking decadron as an after chemo/cisplatin anti-nausea med? my hubby, mike, was to take decadron 8mgs x2 a day for 4 days following chemo. after mentioning the hiccups to his MO, the decadron was reduced to 4mgs x2 a day for 2 days (lucky for mike he tolerated the chemo very well). this reduction in meds didn't cure the hiccups, but reduced them greatly.

i also read that hiccups can be a side effect of emend (another anti-nausea med). so while the cisplatin may be the culprit, the anti-nausea meds also play into this side effect.

best advice we can share is be aware of your meds & keep your MO appraised of your health & comfort cause "everyone is different" & there are numerous meds available that can be tailored to help relieve your symptoms.

take good care, judy

I had intractable hiccups on and off and it was miserable, I tried a lot of different things, antiacids, reglan, muscle relaxers, narcotics, compazine, etc. Some things that didn't work were someone scaring you, holding your breath, blowing into a bag, etc. It was pretty wierd in that they would stop when I was eating then start all over when I was done. Drove me nuts. The hiccups and constipation were my Tx low points. The pain from the sores and burns was pretty well managed.

Yea, these treatment related hiccups are not your ordinary, everyday kind. Bill would hiccup 5 or 6 times right together..convulsive type..just awful. We were thankful that the Reglan/Thorazine combo gave him relief. I would love to hear a scientific explanation for them.

Oh yeah - I forgot - they gave me thorazine too. That's the same stuff they gave the patients in the "Cuckoo's Nest". I can hear Montovani playing "Charmaine" right now ;-)

You should have seen the look on the face of the admitting nurse one night during his treatment when I took Bill to the ER with a fever. When presented with the list of his meds, and explaining that the Thorazine was for hiccups, she had that look like, "Oh sure." I think she thought I was making it up.

Yep, I remember it in Cuckoo's Nest....great movie!

Yeah I liked Jack in that movie. Kinda pretended to be sane or insane (?) and took all the real insane ones on their special trip and baseball game.

Hey I know that compared to most people I'm not normal so I belong around similar peeps.
