As you might have guessed from my posts, I identify with this Washington Post author's attitude. Not that I did not get excellent care once the cancer was identified, it was the year long dispiriting trek as my ear pain was attributed to colds, flu, allergy, sinus, eustachian tube, TMJ, until finally being told it's all in my head (which prompted me to get a CT scan of my head since everybody now agreed that was the problem). Sure you could not feel the tumor, no lesions, no white patches, in fact zero physical signs except ear pain so understandable.
