John ( an Australian) loves to do the type of BBQ they do in the southern US where he smokes various cuts of meat for hours and hours. At Christmas, even though he was only 2 weeks out of treatment and couldn't eat a morsel, he insisted on smoking/roasting a turkey over apple wood. It created a lot of smoke and really made me think he should be staying away from that type of activity and possibility that type of food because of the possible carcinogenic properties of combusted wood.

I know there has been discussion on the site before about BBQ and smoked foods but has anyone been told by a doctor not to be around smoked foods or BBqs or has decided themselves that it might be too much of a risk factor?

It might sound a little overly cautious but John used to smoke meats or BBQ over wood 3 to 4 times a week for the last 3 years. I know moderation is key to any type of exposure but to see his head in smoke of any kind - even from apple wood, is nerve wracking.

Hello Mary,
I loved barbecue food too before I was ill. Today, I still eat roasted or smoked meat occasionally but in little quantity. Chinese doctors are very much against this type of food. I guess eating too much of this kind of food is bad for health, not just to cancer patients but to ordinary people as well.

Being from the south, I grew up with BBQ. The aroma is second to none. Down here we use the wood from the Hickory tree. Karenng, you are correct about this type of food not being healthy, but it sure does taste and smell good. I can only smell, dysphagic, but I still cook. No true southerner would ever give up his BBQ skills even if they are not honed. It's tradition, kinda like growing tomatoes.
Carcinogens from the smoke never occured to me.

Its not so much the smoke or flavoring it is individual habits such a smoking and drinking that cause oral cancer.

I am a oral cancer survivor. Had had a retromolar trigone squamous cell carcinoma in the right side of my mouth and jaw. I had surgery in july, radiation and chemo on august and september. Honestly the radiation was not bad. The chemo however took a major toll on me. So far I am doing well and looking forward to going back to work in March if all goes well. My cancers thus far is gone and I hope it stays that way.

Hi Fred, I'm so happy that you're a survivor, I guess you could say I am one also but I'm a bit of a pessamist so not counting my chickens just yet..smiles... I have had cancer of the larynx the only treatment I had was 20 doses of radiation during the summer months of 2005. Since then I have been given the all clear for 7 check ups. I have go once a month for a year.
I just want to add something to your earlier post of "Its not so much the smoke or flavoring it is individual habits such a smoking and drinking that cause oral cancer"
All I want to say is I have never smoked in my life and neither does my immediate family and the only drinking (alcohol)I do is a couple of glasses at Christmas. Yet I got oral cancer.
Good luck on returning to work, just take it slow as I found when I returned to work I still got very tired and was going to bed by 8pm still do now sometimes.

UK, I guess cancers can come from many sources. My doctors nailed me on smoking and drinking beer every now and then. Like you, I know people that have no history, no bad habits ( that they will admit to), and they end up with cancer. Its a fight and will continue to be one. I am fortunate that I live here when MD Anderson Center is located. That is one amazing facility. I will take it slow for I feel my limitations. I tried to go back to work too fast and ended up in the hospital. I learned my lesson. I wish you all the best and you will be fine. By the way I love England. We have been there many times and just love it. You are very luck to live in such a beautiful country. Best wishes.
