I was wondering if anyone could use a portable suction machine? I would be happy to send it if someone could use it.

Tonya,

I was wondering if the machine has a long suction tube. My father can no longer open his mouth more than 1/2 inch. Side effects of the radiation. However, he continues to choke on flem inside that he cannot get out. I was hoping maybe he could relieve some of the mess. Medicare is of no help. Let me know.

Vickie, we rented a suction machine from a Home Health Care firm- the cost was $45.00 a month. It had a fairly long tube[small] at the end of the hose. You could probably use Tonya's and get a replacement suction tube or rig your own, Amy

Vickie,
I looked at David's machine and the tubing has been taken off. Replacements were in a large box of supplies I have already given away. Do you know where to get the long tube you need? I would be happy to send you the machine and would be happy to assist with money for the tubing. Surely it isn't too much. Please ask home health or his doctor where to get the tube and let me know if you can use the machine.
Hugs,
Tonya

Vickie and Tonya, Any place that sells Durable Medical Equipment [DME to the suppliers] can get replacement parts for the tubing. You just have to tell them which part you need. Amy

My insurance company paid for the suction machine. They delivered it and showed me how to use it.
Have your doctor write a script for one and it should be covered.
Is there someone out there that has one and could donate it to her?

I believe the part you are looking for is called a "yankur".

Vicki, I hope this info has helped. Like I said, I have a perfectly good machine I would love to send to you. If you can find the tubing or "yankur" let me know how much it is and I will send a check to cover its purchase. It would mean so much to me to be able to help you. Please let me know. I am sending a big bear hug and putting all my strength in it for you.
Please let me know if I can help.

Tonya and All,

Thanks so much for all your help. I am going to try to get the script and re-submit to Medicare. Will keep you posted. Thanks again Tonya.

Vickie, be sure you mention the mouth opening issue to his doctors. There is therapy to help with this and the sooner he starts the better.

Take care
