Hi everybody,

I have some good news to share....regarding my mom (Barbara). We were thinking she was going to have to have additional surgery and another biopsy and then she saw her dentist who shaved down the bone that was exposed due to radiation back at the end of July. I'm happy to say she has finally started to heal properly! She is hardly in need of the pain meds and she actually seems somewhat like her old self again.

I kept telling her like Gary said that for every week of radiation it takes a month to start feeling better. She had 6 weeks of radiation and now she is just about 6 months post radiation and finally starting to feel human again. She has most of her energy back and can eat much better and says the only pain she really gets now is after she eats because food still gets stuck in the open bone area and she has to flush it out. She says some things like citrus and spicy stuff is still unmanageable. She also attributes the not feeling great thing to being one of the healthiest people prior to radiation and chemo and never having any medical problems to going through radiation and feeling like she was going to die. The recovery from radiation is so slow and she was not used to being a sickly person so it really set her back. But now I am happy to report that I have my mom back. She wants to shop and hang out and it is so nice to actually see her smile and laugh again.

Thank you all for everything you have done to help her through this. (I always relay everything I learn from you to her). You are the BEST!

Dani,

That's terrific. Your mom is right -- if you've been very healthy before, it's hard to understand how really awful you can feel during treatment and then wonder if you're ever going to get better. I'm glad she feels as though she has turned the corner.

Dani, That's great news. I'm sure you and your mother both, as well as the rest of the families, are all pleased. Getting sick when you aren't used to it can definitely create quite a different state of mind. Let mom know that it just keeps getting better and better from here on out. My doctor says minimum 2 years until all of the rad treatment side effects are completely stable, so hang in there, it will be an interesting ride. Will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Dani,

Great news about your mom! Glad to see that she's starting to see and feel the affects of recovering. As everyone has mentioned before, recovery is a long and sometimes very slow process. When I get discouraged thinking that I'm not progressing fast enough, all I have to do is think back to last July when I started this journey and I think, WOW!, I really have come a long, long way from where I began. Tell your mom to keep up the good work and God bless you for being there by her side every step of the way. She is truly blessed to have you in her corner and helping her through not only the bad times, but there to experience all the good things that are happening now (especially shopping - that's a real picker upper!).

Keep smiling and a hug to your mom,

Nancy

Hey Dani!

I am so sorry to have not responded sooner but I am so happy to hear mom is doing better. I know it has been a tough road for both (all) of you. It only gets better from here.
