The Sharper Image says they have one that takes viruses out of the air, but I'm a bit skeptical. Would appreciate any thoughts. Thank you.

I've been sceptical, too. Before responding, I checked ConsumerReports.com. I'm a subscriber, so I was able to call up an article from Oct 2003. It talks about HEPA filters and electrostatic precipitators like the Sharper Image model.
A key paragraph states... Without convincing proof that air cleaners improve health, the medical profession remains skeptical. In a January 2000 study of asthma and indoor air exposure, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies said that "air cleaners are probably helpful in some situations in reducing allergy or asthma symptoms." However, the Institute qualified that statement by adding that the data suggest air cleaning "is not consistently and highly effective in reducing symptoms.

Checked out the Sharper Image ones and read some reviews that were not kind to the product. I bought the Holmes brand that I found available at Walgreens and a larger unit at Walmart. Both of them had hepa filters included and did a fine job of cleaning the air. The larger unit, I put in the basement where I had been setting up an art studio to knock the smell of paint. The smaller unit is in my bedroom with "Family Care" on the outside of the unit. Both the large and the small air cleaners were under a hundred.
They don't have the zippy ads that Sharper Image has, but as a consumer, I must say that they did an excellent job. Although it's not scientific, I'm judging by how well odors were removed from the air. In my case, being sensitive to smells it was beneficial.
I've even purchased replacement hepa filters to get them in working order for my illness.

As far as taking viruses out of the air I think the only thing that would be remotely effective would be the SARS masks (or similar) like they wear or wore in China during the SARS outbreaks. The main purpose of air cleaners or purifiers is taking dust, pollens, etc., out of the air for people with asthma and allergies. Remember that viruses in particular must have a place to enter the body such as mucosal membrane areas. The main entry points are the eyes, nose and mouth. Most of us come in contact with viruses on our hands/fingers and rub our eyes. The best action is to avoid crowds and wash the hands often while avoiding rubbing the eyes. When white counts are extremely low, weigh the risks of coming in contact with others and especially question everyone who is visiting if they have had any colds, viruses, etc., or have been around anyone that has.
When the white counts are below 1500, a mask should be worn and gloves even when touching outside dirt in the garden below about 3000.
