Just wondering if anyone on this forum from Canada or Europe has used Benzydamine as a mouthwash to combat mucositis. It is available there but not here yet. A recent survey of treatments for oral mucositis said that this product, as well as GelClair and a drug currently in trial (L-Glutamine AES-14) were superior to any other materials (including "magic mouthwash" which did not appear to be so very magic for most people) in alleviating OM.

I am surprised that no one responded to this post -- Benzydamine was written up in a recent review paper as the only material that showed significant effect on both preventing and alleviating severe mucositis in HNC patients recieving radiation, compared to a placebo in a clinical trial. It is used (as a oral wash) before radiation begins and 3-4x daily throughout.

Unfortunately it is not yet available in the USA, but is in Canada as a prescription drug (Tantum), and OTC in UK, much of the rest of Europe and Australia/NZ (Difflam).

I would also be interested to hear if anyone from these countries was given benzydamine and if it helped.

Gail,
it's not avaiable in the US and that's probably why no one responded. I saw the report as well and it's probably in the news section of the site. Sounds very promising.

Yes, it sounds very interesting -- I just knew we have some forum members from UK and so thought they might have been given this medication and could give us a report.

It is a non-steroidal antinflammatory and perhaps FDA is being a bit cautious as they have been burned recently on Vioxx and Bextra. However it is not ingested and all the material I have read seems to be almost no side effects unless it is accidentally swallowed.

The major difference from all the other stuff used for mucositis is that it should be started before treatment begins as it is also prophylactic.

Since mucositis can be serious in and of itself, and can lead to treatment delays which reduce effectiveness, this kind of medication is really needed. There is another med in trial, Aesgen, which is a l-glumatine formulation which greatly enhances uptake of the amino acid and provides protection and relief. Unfortunately, still "in the pipeline" too!
