any feedback on anyone that has used amifostine
(ethyol) to reduce the dry mouth and or preserve
salaviary glands
Starting treatment Monday June 20 still trying to make this decision

Hello Snyder, The general observation is that if you can get it, try it. If you tolerate the side effects (some people don't have any problems) then stay with it. Ask your doctor about what he/she has observed as far as side effects vs. benefit. I think anyone here would trade anything for more saliva. It is worth it.

PS I did not get it because I would have had to drive 180 miles or more one way each day of treatment. My radiation department didn't offer it mostly because of schedualing difficulties.


Mark, 21 Year survivor, SCC right tonsil, 3 nodes positive, one with extra-capsular spread. I never asked what stage (would have scared me anyway) Right side tonsillectomy, radical neck dissection right side, maximum radiation to both sides, no chemo, no PEG, age 40 when diagnosed.

So far I've been one of the lucky ones. No nausea, take compazine before shot. If it's offered, its sure worth trying. Ounce of prevention etc. etc Edd, 1 week rads, 7 weeks chemo.
