Hello, I'm new to the board and just needed some advice from somebody....

My name is Tom and I'm 19 years old and I have a friend, Andrew, who uses smokeless tobacco. He's only 17 and I'm really worried for him. He drinks heavily too and the other night I went to a party and he was using both. He's a really good friend of mine, but I think if I approach him about this, it will really piss him off. I'm really confused and don't know what to do!?! Actually, I know what I have to do and that is talk to him, but I don't know how to go about it....Any help would be great!

Thanks for listening..

Tom confused

Tom,
you are a good friend to be concerned....yes, talking is a good start. Is your friend hooked up to the internet? Maybe after talking nicely to him about your fears, you should have him check out this web site...he might be scared enough to stop after reading some of the personal stories and posts. Hopefully he will realize what a good friend you are and thank you!! Good luck, kiddo, and let us know how it goes.

Brooke is right. But even the best friends, or the logic of an intelligent people, sometimes cannot be enough to get someone to quit smoking or chewing. The addiction is, by design, intense, and stopping isn't easy even for those with the desire. The longer the use, the harder the quitting. Have him visit the people section of this site and read the story about Sean Marsee who died at 19 after being a teenage dipper. It happens. But he will have to want to do this himself.

Tom,
Just wondering how things are going. Did your friend read the articles and posts here? I'm just curious. You made an impression on me, I guess mainly because of your ages. I hope all is going well!

Thanks so much for your concern and I'll keep you updated as much as I am able too....Thanks so much again...bless your hearts smile
