Dee -- We have all been there, done that, got the T Shirt. In 2004 I was here feeling exactly as you do now. No cancer then, but surfaced a few years later. Maybe a misdiagnosis, maybe not. Really doesn't matter.

As others will tell you, it's not cancer until the pathologist says it is. Even then, treatment options and efficacy are vastly improved. Sooner you find out, the sooner you can attack it.

Use this site, as the support is great, but do not freak out because of statistics and horror stories that you read. Lots and lots of folks with successful treatment and long term survival do not post on sites like this.

Best of luck and we are all here for you.

Thank you Jeff, I had a good friend named Jeff is S.C. years ago, air force... I'm going to maintain my cool. My bad spot is on the back of my tongue... No bleeding or any thing, just wierd, kind of like swollen taste buds... Any way, I'm going to maintain a sense of humor about this next mental challange... I'm glad I have some one to communicate with that's had the scare and survived this illness. Thanks again , Dee

Dee,

You didn't mention WHY you were going to get an Oral screening and what type of doc you were going to? Please keep us posted and don't jump to conclusions.

Hi David, I'm going to a dentist tomorrow, I have lumps on the back of my tongue... I believe the dentist is the first place to start and then if I need to be referred to have further tests run to see what it is, he can help get things going...That's about all I know to do right now... Dee

Dee,
If you suspect cancer, please go to an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) doctor. The only way to verify or exclude cancer is by way of biopsy and pathology. A visual exam simply won't do it.

dx 2/13/06. modified radical neck dissection 3/9/06 multiple biopsies of upper airway and direct laryngoscopy. 1 of 47 lymph nodes positive for metastatic undifferentiated carcinoma (lymphoepithelioma). Unknown primary. Finished radiation 5/24/06.

Hi Dee,

It's great that you are being proactive and getting your tongue checked tomorrow. It isn't unusual for someone to notice something that has been in their mouth or on their tongue forever and think it is new.

What you may be seeing are the circumvallate papillae that are far back on the tongue and are normal. They form a "V" on the back top of the tongue, with the point in the middle going back. I'm not saying that this is what you are seeing, however there is a good chance that it is. No one can tell you without looking.

I hope to see you post tomorrow that everything is OK.

Jerry

HI Jerry, yes that is kind of what it looks like, I'm not sure what it is but, I must say no matter how this thing turns out I'm glad I found this site... YOU are all such an awsome inspiration to any person facing any advirsity in life. A scare no matter how minor sends you into a zillion horriable " what if's ". I am amazed by the honesty and concern displayed by evey one that shares their experinces on this site, Thank you , Dee
