I've been checking this board ever since my father got diagnosed with tongue cancer a few weeks ago. He started treatment on Monday, and is doing three Cisplatin chemo treatments every three weeks, and radiation treatment five times a week for seven weeks. I don't really know what to expect, he's mainly been sleeping a lot but hasn't had a problem with nausea or vomiting. It's been tough getting him to eat, especially since he had 11 teeth taken out before his radiation treatments began. I just wanted to say hi, and I think this forum is great!

Thanks,
Jacinta

Hi Jacinta,

Welcome! Have you had a chance to look through the forum, and find the information you need?

You will find lots of information and if you don't find what you want then just ask.

Yes, your dad will sleep a lot during his treatment and maybe a month or so after.

I had same treatment and slept a lot when I got home. Eating will continue to get difficult, soft foods will help, liquid meals such as instant breakfast. Anything with HIGH protein. Does he have a peg tube? I am guessing he does. Make sure he get plenty of water, juices.

Everyone is different going through treatment. I had hard time. My body did not want to work with the treatments. I was real sick. There are other things to watch for such as thrush, and infections. I am sure your doctor told you to watch for those.

If you do not find what you want, just use the search. This site is full of information.

Once again. Welcome and I hope your Dad will come through treatment OK.

Take care,
Diane

Hi Jacinta,

My Dad also went thru the treatment from April to June of this year. How old is your father?

It's treatment and things will get rough for him but he can get thru it! Keep him company and remind him all the time that he can do it and stay positive! Usually people don't get sick till about week 3 or 4 and up to about 1 week after treatment is finished. If you have any questions feel free to ask here or email me.

Take care.

Welcome, Jacinta. I just want to echo that you must watch his liquid intake and calorie intake, whether or not he wants to eat. He could get down really fast if he doesn't eat or drink enough. Stick close to him and be his best cheerleader. :)Amy
