Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 160 | Just want to introduce myself. My name is Linda and I was diagnosed with cancer of the base of the tongue on March of this year. I have had a partial neck dissection, and have gone through radiation, chemo, and brachytherapy. Finished all of that the end of July. Still trying to recover from all of that. Getting stronger everyday! Pray everyday that the tumor is gone. Just wanted to be a part of the board, hopefully I can help someone with something I experienced, and of course I'll be searching for help from others. Thanks for reading this.

Husband: 3 SCC gum and cheek cancers 2002, 2005, 2006: surgery only. Scans clear after removal of small, well differentiated, non-invasive cancers. No radiation. 4th SCC lip diagnosed 4/13/07 - in situ, removed in biopsy. More lip removed 2/8/08 - dysplasia. 2 Biopsies 3/17/09 no cancer (lichenoids)

Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 160 | Thank you for replying. As for the brachytherapy, I was really fortunate. The radiology oncologist that I chose to go to (he was closest) just happened to be one of the doctors who perform this procedure. He works out of the Pittsburgh, PA area. I had a hard time finding information on the internet about the procedure, so I assumed it wasn't performed much. It went well, I suppose. I went through radiation and chemo first for 6 wks., then healed for 2 wks, then had the brachy treatments. I had to stay in the hospital for 7 days while I got the treatments. The doctor said he's had alot of good results from this procedure. If you have anymore questions, I'll be sure to answer them if I can. I don't go for my pet scan till Nov. so I'm not sure were I am at this point. I did get a good checkup a few weeks ago, though, he said he couldn't feel the tumor and everything looked good. I took that just for what it was, "Great News"!!!

Wife of David, 44yo, SCC-BOT-R) mod. rad. ND in Jan 06. 35x standard RT from Feb-April 06. Recur on L) side same level in Sept 06 with mod rad ND. 1/48 node positive SCC + 1/48 positive micropapillary carcioma consistant with thyroid CA.

My husband is not slated for further treatment, but I am just interested in brachytherapy and results. Please keep us informed including how the PET scan goes in Nov. Keep the good news coming!

Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 8,311 | Linda, you said you had base of tongue and you had a PND. Did they find positive nodes before or after the ND? Or at all? The BT, was that at the base of tongue only? I'm just curious?

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

To Marie, yes, I do have an awesome companion who has been through this the whole time. (he even asked me to marry him after my treatment was all done)!! That's a whole other issue. I also have 2 sons, and a great daughter in-law, and brothers and a sister. The support was so overwhelming that my head still spins from all the love and care that I have been blessed with. To David cpa, I don't understand what you meant by BT. I did have one positve node on the right side of my neck. I really have a story to tell, so I'm going to start another post and if anyone is interested, you can read how this was found. Maybe my story is normal, maybe not. I just feel so blessed by the way things happened. Thanks again for the reply...
