Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 3 | I have cancer at the base of my tongue and right neck lymph nodes. The doctors written report calls this T1, N2b, M0 squamous cell carconoma. What does the T1, N2b, M0 designation mean and what at stage? Is there somewhere I can compare the differnt designations so I can see where I am at?

There is a fairly thorough explanation of the TNM staging terminology on this site. You need to go in through the homepage (see the link at the bottom of the screen). After you enter the site, you see a list of topics. Under "Diagnosis" there is a sub-heading for Staging. There is also a wealth of other information addressing many of the questions that come up right after diagnosis.

There is some room for professional judgement with regard to tumor stage and such things as statistics. If you really need to know, ask your doctors. The important thing is what are you being told about treatment options?

Mark, 21 Year survivor, SCC right tonsil, 3 nodes positive, one with extra-capsular spread. I never asked what stage (would have scared me anyway) Right side tonsillectomy, radical neck dissection right side, maximum radiation to both sides, no chemo, no PEG, age 40 when diagnosed.
