I went to a oral surgeon this morning after waiting 5 weeks for a appointment, I have been dealing with bone exposure on a lower tori that was supposed to be removed with my tooth extractions. After 65 rad treatments to my head and neck it is beginning to look like my mandible may be having some problems. The oral surgeon form this morning like some others will not become involved because they feel uncomfortable with how many rad treatments that I have had. He did suggest that I go to U of L Dentistry and ask them to help me since all of my treatments from the start have been through and the cancer center affiliated with them. Finally a Dr. (oral surgeon) at U of L was able to help me today with my discomfort and irritability that comes with sharp bone exposure and a raw tongue rubbing on it. He took some tweezers and removed the exposed bone which he said was the start of osteoradionecrosis in two small spots. A big relief and much comfort from what he explained. he said I was a long way from needing free flap surgery or anything that extensive. I have a prescription for Chlorhexidine Gluconate mouth wash to help with healing of the gums. Are there any other suggestions that anybody was like to share with me that may help me take care of my gums so that hopefully I never have to have such a surgery.

Many members have found a water pik on its lowest setting to be very helpful in caring for their mouth after OC. First talk it over with your doc to ensure it is ok for you to use a water pik. I used to use prescription chlorhexidine rinse mixed with equal parts of water in the water pik.
