Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 7 | Hello...I am pretty scared right now and looking for support. Have had a white spot/bump on top of left side of tongue. It is round and hard to touch. I am 54 yrs old and am a former tobacco chewer. Quit in 2011 and drink moderately as well. It has been there for 2 weeks and dentist referred me to oral surgeon who i see tomorrow. It hasn’t gotten better in two weeks and is hard when i feel it. Not sure if it is tongue cx or not and really worried about tomorrows dr appt. when i look on line for any info, the results are pretty discouraging too. During the past 2 weeks have you continued to drink? If so, I highly recommend stopping completely to give your sore a chance to heal. If you are using a mouthwash that contains alcohol stop using that as well. Resist the urge to touch it, just leave it alone. As you already know... any sore that has been in your mouth and has not healed on its own in 2 to 3 weeks should be checked by a professional. There's many things your spot could be besides cancer, Im hoping its nothing serious.

PS... Try to avoid Dr Google. Put in enough info and it will come up with a million crazy things your spot is. That only causes more stress which isnt good for anyone.

Funny thing is that this bump gets smaller at different timea of the day if that makes sense at is perfectly round and on top of tongue. Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 6 | If the bump's size fluctuates then its unlikely to be a cancerous tumor. Thats not how cancer presents itself. A cancerous tumor stays the same size, it wouldnt change.

Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 7 | Went to OMS today and after much poking amd prodding neck, jaw and oral cavity he chose to do a biopsy and basically took what was there on top of tongue. That was THE worse procedure i have ever had (to date) and the pain now is agony even with the pain meds. Not sure how long this post biopsy pain will be with me (tongue and jaw pain, difficulty swallowing, no food, etc). And that is the easy part. The waiting for results is going to be worse. I hope you're healing well after your biopsy. Yes, they are very painful! I had mine when I was pregnant and they wouldn't give me much pain medication other than a few Tylenol with codeine. Horrible!
Hopefully, all is well and your biopsy results came back negative for cancer!

SCC L oral tongue (no risk factors)
L partial gloss/MND 3/28/11 @ 25 wks preg
T1-2N0M0; no rads/chemo
Tonsillectomy on 8/6/12 +SCC L tonsil T2-3N1M0 (HPV-)
Treated with 35 rads/7 carbo & taxol (Rx ended 10/31/12), but many hospitalizations d/t complications from rx.
Various scans since rx ended are NED!
Part of genetic study for rare cancers @ MGH.
44 years old now...I wasn't sure I would make it! Hoping for 40 more!
