I am so looking forward to the last treatment. I know that I won't feel any better and may feel worse for a while, but at least I'll not be adding to the problem every day! I've started gagging often when I cough or yawn, which leads to more gagging and dry heaves, which just sucks. The Lorazepam under the tongue the RO nurse told me about really helps, though I don't like to do that more than once a day. Crushing the pills for thrush, as well as Tramadol and Mucinex really helps get them down. Have Magic Mouthwash since last week, as well as the Miles Mixture, and that helps too.

I'm doing pretty good getting water down, as well as cream soup, Boost, Carnation Instant Breakfast, herb tea with Eagle Brand milk or honey. Egg drop soup is my favorite, but there aren't many calories in it. I know I'm not getting all the calories I should, though I'm definitely making sure I get enough liquid.

Thanks to you all and your ideas and experiences, this site is a big help.

Wynter,

It sounds like you have got a handle on dealing with the discomfort of radiation. That's really positive.

We were advised by the nurses when John was getting his treatment to stay ahead of the nausea, i.e. Take medication as soon as you start to feel nauseated and don't wait until you are actually throwing up as it will be harder to bring it under control once you start throwing up. Is the gagging due to anxiety or the thick mucous? If it is the former, Lorazepam will help as will mindfulness meditation, or even just telling yourself to calm down and focus on breathing regularly. John did that all through his treatment on the advice of his therapist. If it is caused by thick mucous, then using the Waterpik more often with some magic mouthwash will clear your mouth.

I hope this helps. You are almost there, soon you'll see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Great job! You're closing in on the finish line. Stay in front of the nausea! There are other meds they can prescribe to take prior to treatment to help stay in front of side effects! Way to go and best wishes on a strong finish!
