It's the OCF donors that deserve attention. We have as a foundation been financially supporting this HPV, PDL-1, auto fluorescence, salivary diagnostics and more research since the early days of OCF. While as part of the immunotherapy in head and neck cancers oversight committee at the National Cancer Institute I have been able to review its progress, and make recommendations with the other 14 members, it is really the funding for the research that made the difference in the most recent breakthrough. Private sector, NCI, and OCF as a non-profit all were financially represented in the work done at many institutions and overseen by the Primary Investigator Maura Gillison.

That PDL-1 work which has gotten so much media notice, and all the other things for which OCF itself gets noticed, like our many years of funding HPV/oral cancer research, our work with the CDC on the vaccine issue, our work in 2007 and 2008 with the Kennedy team and the final passage of the landmark tobacco bill that gave the FDA authority over the tobacco companies for the first time in history, brings reporters to us when they wish to do a story. We have the credibility, and the track record in advocacy and research, which in turn makes us a trusted source.

We provide backgrounder information to reporters and other writers and TV news people every month. It's an earned place that our supporters make possible. It allows us to see that the story is told correctly, that the right researchers, that have the depth of information necessary are used for the stories and not some less knowledgable person.

It's a privilege earned, but built on the financial support of everyone who has ever given to OCF.

Brian, stage 4 oral cancer survivor. OCF Founder and Director. The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant.
