They took two samples - one was insitu and the other was pre-cancerous. Dr. used the words "curable"and early when talking with me and my wife. Had pet and ct scans and the cheif radioligist told us that he did not see any metastisis.
Still very nervous and would just like to hear from anyone else with oral melanoma and what to expect. | | | | Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 644 Likes: 1 "OCF Down Under, Kiwi" "Above & Beyond" Member (500+ posts) | "OCF Down Under, Kiwi" "Above & Beyond" Member (500+ posts) Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 644 Likes: 1 | I don't know if anyone currently on board here has had oral melanoma but "in situ", "pre-cancerous", "curable" and "early" sound promising. It's great that it has been picked up so soon. It must have been a relief when the PET and CT scan showed nothing suspicious.
How did you detect it? What sort of treatment will you have?

As far as detecting it, my dentist first thought it was an amalgam tattoo on my gum where a tooth had been extracted. It grew larger and he finally sent me to an Oral Surgeon where it was biopsied on Feb 13. Between then and today its been a series of tests, pre-tests, etc all leading up to the surgery date.
As far as treatment, the doctor will not know until the surgery is done. it could be chemo and/or radiation or nothing. I am hoping for the latter
