Hi all, my brother is seriously struggling to cope after just having a second (failed) operation to open his throat to allow him eat food and drink naturally rather than through a tube/peg.

He has asked about a stent or other possible options that might be available to him. Can anybody shed some light on these and apologies if this has been asked before.

Philip

Brother 51 Y/O
Had a biopsy to remove lump in throat
Recently been through Radio & Chemo
Is in recovery now and trying to deal with post issues
Has had 2 operations to allow food/drink go down throat (unsuccessful)
They say the throat is wide enough but it's the muscles are the problem with the swallowing action
Still feeding through a Peg
Has recently had another biopsy and the cancer is back

It is a new procedure and may help your brother.

Gloria, many thanks for that. I had read your post previously but I was a little disheartened when I read of there only having been 1 done in the world and I'm assuming it happened in Canada? We are in Ireland and I doubt that procedure has reached here yet (I am open to correction).

Your brother's doctor could do a consultation with our doctor and get the details. If you think that is possible, send me a private message and I will send you our doctor's contact information.

One more thing, our doctor will be presenting the procedure at an endoscopy conference in Europe. So, it is not like he won't tell people about it.

Gloria, once again, I really appreciate your replies and offer of help. I will print this is out and go through it with my brother. He has a meeting with his doctor Thursday 29th January to get full results and discuss any possible options from here on in. He has fought a great fight over the last year but is now struggling and will not accept not being able to eat & drink as normal again so we are getting worried at this point. Thanks again.

Can anyone throw any light on the use of a stent when 2 operations have failed to open the esophagus?

The stent is inserted into the esophagus to keep it open until the tissues have healed. To do that, there has to be an opening in the esophagus.
