Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 236 | My mother seemed to be doing well with the Chemo"Cisplatin+5-FU" until the end of day 2 .The nausea seems to be kicking in pretty good and she is complaining of her Jaw feeling like it is locking up. She can hardly open her mouth to eat. She says its very painful. Has anyone had this type of side effect from Chemo.
She was admitted into the hospital to take a 5 day drip then off for 3 weeks before starting round 2.

Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,606 Likes: 2 | I had the same chemo hit never experienced jaw pain or locking up. I would guess it's part of the healing process from surgery but I would make sure the doctors are aware.

Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 3,267 Likes: 1 | Could also be Mucocistis, infection, other oral changes from chemo. Chemo has just about the same side effects as radiation does. Mine were worse than radiation with high dose Taxotere, Cisplatin, and 5-FU starting after completing one week of TPF Induction chemo, which eventually required the hospital burn unit to debride the inside of my mouth, face, hands. 5-FU is also known to cause hand and foot syndrome, so watch that too. Whatever ailment it is always tell the oncologist.

Maybe since she has had quite a bit of surgery in these areas, the chemo might be triggering some nerves or muscles in ways not normally experienced. Please keep us updated if lowering the 5FU helps. 5FU is on the harsh end of the toxicity scale so maybe not too surprising it is causing issues.

Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 236 | Tonight the Oncologist is starting the treatment up again and on a slower drip . This is bag No.3 . He decided to give her 4 bags instead of 5 because of her tolerance. Her jaw seems to be feeling better but I hope I doesn't start up again I guess we will see and at least we will know if it was a side effect from the treatment.

1996, ovarian cancer surgery + cisplatin and taxol.
September, 2007, SCC of left lateral tongue. Excision.
October, 2009 recurrence in scar tissue, T1NOMO. Free flap surgery from left wrist - neck dissection. 63 year old New Zealander. No chemo, no RT.
February, 2014. New primary in left buccal mucosa. Marginal mandibulectomy, neck dissection, right arm free forearm flap. T1N0M0 but third occurrence and some areas of concern: RT started 8 April and finished 19 May.

Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 236 | Well my mother completed the 4 bags of Cisplatin +5FU and was release from the hospital today. After the MO slowed the drip down it seemed she tolerated it better. She is still pretty nauseated but Zofran seems to be helping some. She is having some pain in her neck and face so Norco has become her best friend lately.
She will see the MO in 2 weeks to be set up for a repeat Chemo round 2.
