Joined: Aug 2014 Posts: 1 | I had surgery to remove cancerous tissue from my mouth and had flap reconstruction to replace half of my tongue. A week later had to have the flap removed, because the other part of my tongue rejected it. I had chemo and radiation 2 years prior to the surgery, which left my tongue not strong enough to support the flap. Now I am looking for ideas on how to drink and eat, with only half a tongue ! Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,606 Likes: 2 | Generally, radiation destroys vessels that control blood flow. That can cause a lot of different problems as blood is crucial for all tissue and internals of the entire body.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 6 | There is also a medication that can be taken to help encourage blood vessel growth. My doc had me on it for a while several years ago. Sorry, but my mind was very foggy then and I dont think I ever even knew what it was called.

Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,606 Likes: 2 | Was it Trental/Pentoxifylline by chance? Just trying to jog your memory. I ask because that and HBOT are the two things that stop fibrosis damage in all the studies I have found.

Joined: Dec 2010 Posts: 5,260 Likes: 3 | I tend not to use my flap side for eating and such for you soft but solid foods might be best. An Omelet - soft veggies - put it in and chew and swallow on the good side. I sometimes use liquid (water, or almond milk to help wash it down).
