Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 6 | Only after the doctor's exam, a biopsy and a PET scan can the stage be determined. What shows on the outside isnt the entire sore...that is IF its cancerous. Take one step at a time and get checked out first. Hopefully its nothing serious and can easily get corrected.

Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 286 | Please do yourself a favour before you Google yourself to death. Not every headache is a brain tumour, and not every doctor is a clueless hack. Your condition could be something very easily diagnosed and not malignant. See your doctor first. If he excludes cancer there is probably a very good reason and if there is any doubt at all he'll do a biopsy. Let us know how you go.

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 6 | Either an oral surgeon or an ENT is qualified to do a biopsy. Ive had them done by both. For most its preferable to have an ENT do the biopsy. For most it makes it easier to have who will be managing your care do it.

But for the sake of giving me hope, what else could this over month-long canker sore on my tongue be if it isnt C? It could be leukoplakia, oral lichen planus, dysplasia, a benign cyst, erythroplakia or maybe even thrush to name a very few possibilities. Mouth sores can be caused from a tooth rubbing on delicate mouth tissues or even from medications or compromised immune systems. I think there is an association with epstein barr as well. See, all kinds of things can cause this and also it could be any number of things. Try not to worry until you know what it is for certain then make your battle plan on how to deal with it. Stress does not help at all it could make whatever is going on worse so please do yourself a favor, relax and keep busy with positive things.
