I am new to this forum. My husband had a tonsil biopsy yesterday in Boston. The results won't be back for 2 weeks (Yikes). My husband has Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and I'm wondering if anyone else on this site has had tonsil cancer as a secondary cancer to CLL. If so, what treatment option did you choose?

Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 559 Likes: 1 | Hi Karen - Welcome to the family. I can't help you with the CLL, but I did have tonsil SCC (squamous cell carcinoma). In my case there was no lymph node involvement so all I got for treatment was 35 doses of radiation, that was about 7 months ago. You can read up about radiation treatment on our website pages or hear it firsthand from people who have been there in our Currently in Treatment forum. If you can, ask the lab to do the pathology testing for HPV16 virus. There's a little psychology to get past if positive, but the bottom line is HPV related oral cancers respond better to treatment and hence those who have it usually have better treatment outcomes. Of course, we all hope it's not cancer, but if it is, you have a whole army of people behind you supporting you and your husband through this journey. take care, let us know how it turns out regardless of outcome. 11/13 start rads, no chemo
12/13 taste gone, dry mouth,
02/14 hair slowly returning
05/14 taste the same, dry sinuses, irrigation helps.
01/15 food taste about 60% returned, dry sinuses are worse in winter.
12/20 no more sinus problems, taste pretty good

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 3,267 Likes: 1 | The majority of head and neck cancers are SCC, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, the same with the tonsil, although, lymphoma can also affect the tonsils, a lymphoid, and know of someone who had it. They did a tonsillectomy, radiation, and then chemo later on used for their type of lymphoma. I also know of a child through their parents foundation that had Burkitt's Leukemia in the tonsil.
