Hello. My husband is a cancer survivor. He has just recently gotten his permanent obturator. He is not having any problem talking. However, he constantly has nasal dripping when he eats. His dentist says he will always have some dripping. But, this is like a constant flow. He has to keep a napkin under his nose when he eats. Has anyone out there had this problem with their obturator?

Hi, fjb -

Yes, this was a problem for me (and still is) -- I have an obturator and have issues with a drippy nose, especially when drinking and eating. It was worse for the first year, got better and better over time; now (four years later) I just need to wipe my nose a few times during a meal. I don't know why it happens, nor why it got better, but there is HOPE for your husband that things will improve! Hang in there!

I had this problem for the first year or so with the obturator, but it slowly goes away. I have mine for three years now and very, very rarely have nasal dripping when the obturator is in. I think over time not only does your mouth change from healing but your brain also slowly adjusts the way you chew, swallow, etc to accommodate this new "object".

hi Nicole,
have u thought of reconstructive surgery to remove the obturator?
For me its been 3 yrs now (similar to u, 3 teeth) and I would like to get reed of the obturator but cann't find proper surgeon (I leave in Israel) and even considering comming to the states.
Have u heared of someone that did this surgeory?
THANKS

I've had mine for about 8 Months now and so glad I have it as it helps my speech tremendously. I don't feel so lonely now! I know everything up there is not properly working and/or missing, etc., so just felt it goes with the turf, dealing with dripping nose. I still have a huge problem eating with it in, and whether it's in or out my nose seems to like to run now. One major issue I have is the mucous that backs up and I have to clear out. I have this with the obturator in or out, doesn't matter. I recall after my first two battles I had the same thing but it seemed to be more clear, just thick saliva, as oppossed to mucous looking "Junk." I guess I viewed it as just kind of an expectation but this time it also backs up around the soft palate insert.
