My father had a mandiblectomy on Friday 6/13. We were told he would be in the hospital for 14 days at a minimum. They just called and said he is to leave this Saturday 6/21, 9 days after surgery. I don't have anyone that is able to be there at home with him since my brother, who he lives with, has to work. Who can I call to get someone to come to the house while my brother is at work? My father doesn't have insurance but I applied for Medicaid over a month ago and it hasn't been approved yet.

daughter of George:

Ask at the hospital is they offer home health aides or a visiting nurse service. Without insurance its not going to be easy finding help for at home. That probably has something to do with why he is being released so quickly. I hate seeing how money rules the medical profession!

If your brother has been at a full time position for over one year and the company has over 50 employees then he would automatically qualify for FMLA leave. This is a federal law! He is eligible to take up to 12 weeks time to care for an immediate family member or himself.

Think of anyone you know of that does not work. Anyone from any churches or other organizations? How about cousins, neighbors or even local mature teenagers? There has to be someone available to help your father. He is probably feeling pretty lousy still so he may mostly sleep and not need much help besides helping him to take pain meds.
