Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 236 | I was wondering why my mother had to take two Radiation treatments a day. I asked the RO and he said in the Pathologist Report the Margins were questionable . Could that mean all the cancer was not removed during surgery ? One of her main complaints from the beginning was ear pain and recently her ear has started to hurt again. Maybe the pain is from the Rad I'm not sure but its starting to worry me and my mother.

Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 1,024 | Hi Sweetpe, yes if the report says questionable margins it means that there may be some residual cancer cells that were not removed by the surgery.
I would talk to your radiation Oncologist about the ear pain. This could well be due to the radiation but you should mention it. Also so that he can give your Mum adequate pain relief.

March 2017 - 5 years disease free. Woohoo!

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 286 | The application of rads is a complex technique, well planned and timed. It is not unusual to have two rads in a day, in my case it was timed around the availability of the machines on public holidays. The rads have to be 7 hours apart (I think it was 7, near enough).
Ask the docs about the ear pain, also does your Mother have any tinnitus? Report that to the docs too, as with any other new symptoms or changes.
