After most meals and during I get the feeling that stuff is stuck and hanging up and it is so uncomfortable that i stop eating because I feel like I am going to breathe it into my lungs. I am 4 months post rad and chemo. Joined: Dec 2010 Posts: 5,260 Likes: 3 | Over time the tissue hit with radiation can shrink, stiffen, and become fibrous. This includes shrinking of the throat area, jaw muscles and mouth area.
The way to help stave this off and maintain what you have is to do swallowing exercises religiously, yawning and stretching these muscles. And lots of water to help wash down your foods as you eat.

Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,606 Likes: 2 | We are all born with pharyngeal pouches that develop into different anatomical parts in the head. As we naturally age and muscles weaken, the pouches develop to protect the aerodigestive tract from allowing things to get into the lungs. The natural muscle process is for the pharyngeal muscles to perform something like a "wave" to clear the throat of food and such. The pharyngeal muscles get beat up bad from treatment. That is most likely what you are experiencing. A good SLP can show you different strategies to help flush the area out with liquids.
As Cheryl says, swallowing exercises and stretching are lifetime events now,if you want to maintain swallowing.
Losing weight over this exacerbates the problems as you are losing lean muscle at this stage of your recovery if your weight is decreasing unless you are above your pretreatment weight.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 6 | A barium swallow test should be conducted by a SLP or speech pathologist from your treatment center. Its important to see exactly what is happening when you try to eat and get you some help. The only thing I can suggest is to take your time when eating, take small bites, chew thoroughly and focus on what you are doing until you can get properly evaluated.

Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 381 | Nose, even from my surgery, I had the same sensation...sort of like you took too big of a bite, and didn't quite get it all down. I did the barium test as well (several times), and really the problem with me was a lack of saliva production which makes it harder to get everything down past the back of the throat. I drink lots of water and milk when I eat (small sips, no gulping) to help with that.
