My name is joe and I am new to this site .... I went to the dentist for a cleaning and they had found two small painless white spots on my gum the dentist told me that they looked like scares. Being a former tobacco chewer I decided to dive in further. I just had an appt with a oral surgeon and he wants to remove the spots and have them biopsied .... Starting to get scared bc I now have a wife and 16month old daughter that I want to watch grow up .... I am keeping my fingers crossed that the spots are not cancer .... Does anyone have a light they can shine on the subject?

Hi Joe,

You don't mention any other symptoms like a painless swollen gland, difficulty swallowing etc. so it could be any number of things that aren't cancer.

A biopsy is the most definitive way to diagnose OC. It sounds like your oral surgeon is erring on the side of caution and that's a good thing. Hopefully it's nothing and life can go on for you and your family.

Positive thoughts and prayers

I do have neck swelling on the same side the bumps are but when I went to my to my gp he told me that he didn't feel anything abnormal and just surface swelling and to ice and take Advil its still kinda swollen but not as tight ... So I don't know if I need to wait and see what the biopsy of the white spots is before I see if my neck swelling is related or not ...

A biopsy will be able to determine exactly what the spots are. Try not to get ahead of yourself with this. It could be something minor. It will likely be a couple weeks before you get the results.

If you have a sore in your mouth that has not healed in 2 weeks or longer then its time to seek a specialist like an oral surgeon or an ENT (one whose practice focuses on mainly treating oral cancer patients). A white spot could be any number of things besides oral cancer. Go get it checked and find out whats going on.
