So, today my Dad decided to try some enchilada soup my friend made for him (all he has had for weeks are Ensure shakes). He got it all down just fine and said it was absolutely delicious. So, I go home and he calls and tells me he ate a Saltine cracker with mustard on it!!!!!! He said the mustard didn't bother his mouth and he just needed extra water to get the cracker down! THEN, he decided he wanted to eat some salsa from Chili's that my Mom had in the fridge--he had some spoonfuls of that and said it was just fine! We're so excited!!!!! We feel like he is finally turning a new leaf!!!! 4 weeks post radiation and he can eat solid food!!!! He wants to try out a little hamburger from McDonald's and see how it goes. haha. He's on a roll now!!! He's already got a list of foods he wants to try and homemade bacon gravy is at the top of the list. :))

That's great, Brandi! Just make sure he has the water for washing things down.

Woo-Hooo!!!!! Yeah!!!! Im so happy to read your great update. You just made my day. What a difference a few days can make with recovering.

I found success with relearning to eat at buffet restaurants. Your dad can try a bite or 2 of all kinds of different foods. Tell him to avoid rice for a while. It sticks and can cause choking.

Keep it going! I don't know how it does it, but definitely has a taste for spices. I can eat a Big Mac, due to the special sauce, but that's even spicy sometimes for me.

Fatty meats have more moisture than say chicken, etc so have him try those first. I found ham steaks very juicy and easy to eat at first. Also anything covered in sauces helps.

Don, I eat fatty cuts of meat too, like Ed, fried, braised meats. I like rib eye, skirt, flank, oxtail, pig feet, chicken wings, buffalo style, but not spicy, fatty pork, Chicken deep fried, oven fried, dark meat only, seafood saut�ed in butter, oil. Fat increases taste, makes it easier to swallow and also increases appetite.

Sausages and hot dogs (get the uncured natural kind without the nitrites/nitrates added during curing) are also easy to eat. Gilbert's are excellent - get stay away from the chipotle as it is pretty hot.

I liked the uncured hotdogs too, but even better bratwurst, and other German sausages. I had a burtito from Chiptoles, and the pork is least spicy, I do not get any of sauces., I got brave, and had them the pico de gallo, something like that, all the others trimmings, and sour cream mellows the heat, guacamole is a little spicy. Starting out after rads might be too much slice food, took me several years, but some just jump into the fire.
