Hi. My Mom has stage 4 mets to the lungs. Not in the bones or liver etc. She has had a few reoccurances over the last few years. Now this mad They gave her the "treatment option" to start Chemo. I think its three chemo meds. But the treatment can only control the cancer temporarily I am guessing from what they said. Anyhow, has anyone been through this and is there any hope? I feel like they said the treatment can prolong life for 10 mos. This is not what I want to hear and I'm sure its really hard for my Mom to hear... Well, I have looked around this website and I see there are some serious survivors who have fought this terrible cancer. I am looking to see if anyone has any input;the truth on this is appreciated even as hard as it may be. Thank you!

Virginia, Im very sorry to hear about your mother! I went back and read your posts from 2008 to see what she has been thru. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with how to treat mets to the lungs. I know chemo for oral cancer will not cure it, the chemo would only be for palliative care.

Have you sought out a second opinion at a cancer center? That would be the very best thing to do to help your mother and to know if she will be able to get thru this. The countries top cancer treatment facilities may be her only shot. Here is a link to the list.

Cancer center list

Best wishes!!!!

Mets to lungs is hard... There is a woman here who battled for four years and had mets to lungs - she was expecting to be cancer free as of last January. She was involved in 2 clinical trials - one tumor was removed, the other was treated with the trial. If your mom is at a ccc, ask about clinical trials. Have they biopsied the lung tissue? I'm assuming so. Hopefully someone will be along that can offer more information.

Take care and god bless.

Virginia,

I was diagnosed with mets to the lungs at one point. I asked for a biopsy and it came back negative for cancer even though my ENT was sure it was cancer. Turns out it was inflammation from aspiration of food particles into the lungs. One on the left and one on the right.

If your mom has not had this biopsied, you might want to consider that before continuing treatment.

This was when I had my recurrence. They would not have aggressively treated the tumor in my neck if they had gone on thinking I had mets to the lungs. My ENT was recommending chemo with palliative care.

I switched doctors after that one.

Damn I wish your mom nothing but the best . Lung cancer ia a toughy. I lost my best friend to it about 4 yrs ago. He only made a couple of months after being diagnosed. He should have gone to the Dr sooner like I kept urging but didn't. Give MOM a big hug for me or from all of us.

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.
