Hi! My name is Callie, my wonderful husband Don was diagnosed with stage II oral cancer of his tongue on October 17, 2011. On December 9, 2011 he went through surgery to remove the front half of his tongue and 32 lymph nodes. He had a trach tube and peg tube inserted. He began his six weeks of radiation on February 1, 2012, his last day was March 20. His trach tube was removed in removed in April. As of right now he is still solely dependant on his peg. He tries sips of water, but chokes often.

Welcome to OCF. If your husband is having trouble sipping water he should have a barium swallowing test done. This will help him by making sure the water isnt ending up in his lungs. He may need the help of a speech therapist and/or nutritionist to help him to manage eating again.

Best wishes with his recovery. It sure can be a long road but he will get there. Good luck!

He had some sort of swallowing test and he passed, but that was before radiation. The speech therapist said he isn't ready so we're working on finding a new one. Thank you for your response! I will be sure and ask the doctor about a nutritionist!
Thank you,
Callie

Yes he needs a post treatment swallowing test done. I choked a lot on thin liquid still do, so I use a thickener in my liquids....helps a ton!

Hope your husband recovers smoothly.

Thank you! I'm still in the process of urging him to try different things, but he's not ready just yet.

Welcome to the greatest place for support. Healing takes time, and everyone heals at their own pace. I second what everyone else has been saying.

Hi Callie - you're among great friends here. The swallowing business can be very tough and the suggestion for post-rads therapy are excellent. I was given exercises that really helped, and I had a very mild problem compared to Don's.

I'm so happy to read about how much you're helping him! All of you caregivers are quite fantastic. Please tell Don we're all rooting for him.
