Just joined today. Looking forward to learning from others here - and helping when I can.
I started chemo on 3/30 and radiation on 4/9 ... 3 down, 32 to go.
I had a stage IVA HPV driven squamous cell in my neck, primary turned out to be on my tonsil - but that was only determined by PET Scan and tonsillectomy, it did NOT show up on pathology/biopsy when squamous cell was removed! All visible cells were removed. Doing chemo and radiation is "precautionary".

Welcome to OCF! You will learn so much from this site. There are also page after page on the main OCF site with all kinds of important info.

Can you clarify something? So you wrote your cancer was picked up by only a PET scan? What did the biopsy show? What about the tissue that was removed, did that show SCC? I assume your tissue was tested for HPV which is why you knew it was HPV+ SCC.

Just starting out with your treatments can be a bit scary. Do your very best to get in at least 2500 calories and 48oz water every single day. This isnt optional, you cant skimp one day and make it up the next. It will make a huge difference on how easily you get thru this.

Best wishes with your treatments!

Sorry but I don't believe your chemo and especially the radiation is precautionary. IMO the radiation is almost mandatory. At least your cells tested + for HPV so relatively speaking that's a good thing. Hang in there and we will be with your throughout this process. Have they discussed a feeding tube with you?

BTW as you will soon learn you have found the BEST oral cancer site in the world. We learn from and help each other every day so welcome and use us.

Welcome NHA - I agree with David on the mandatory rads. Also that you're in the right place. Please keep us updated and ask any and all questions you can think of.

You'll get through it!

NH,I'll add my welcome and, as you can see, we had very similar diagnoses. I'm 4 years out now and the only problem I have is dry mouth, which is remedied by Biotene mouthwash and spray. It will probably be a while before you'll be able to eat anything so get it all in while you can. And stay hydrated.

David R. 65 yr old male non-smoker, light drinker, stage 3 or 4, depending on which doc you ask, scc rt. tonsil, 2 nodes, 7 weeks radiation and chemo. No surgery. Teatment ended 3/20/08. PET scan 8/08 showed no cancer.
And now, as of oct, 2010, caregiver to wife, Linda, with breast cancer.
May, 2013, Linda diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. Enuf already.

Welcome NHA!

I am just south of you in MA! Where are you getting your treatments?

It seems like you have a good prognosis. I didn't have rads or chemo and it terrifies me to think of needing it, but SO many others have gotten to the other side and are alive and well to show for it!

Best of luck and please let me know if I can be of any help.

Take care,
Kerri

Hi NHA - Glad you found us here! ( I grew up in NH) My son had radiation only and no chemo. It was really rough for him but he's doing great now. It really is important to keep up with the calories and water every single day. You can't fall off the required amount and expect to make it up later. Ask all the questions you can think of for your doctors or for anyone here. You can get lots of ideas for questions from the main pages of this site. Check back often and let us know how you are doing.
