Hi all. Short question and to the point. How long did you experience tongue pain for after your surgery? I am now 2 months and doing well. My tongue looks completely healed but the scar is still quite sore especially at the end of the day. Its more of a curiosity question than a concern.

July 2011- Biopsy of white patch on right side of tongue positive for cancer.
CT shows no spread
August 2011 - Partial glossectomy of right tongue. No Rad, no Chemo.
August 2011 - Pathology shows clear margins, mild to severe dysplasia in removed tissue.

Mine still hurts from time to time and I'm 8 mos out. Nothing major. Actual pain maybe a month or two. Do have it checked out if it continues... Maybe there is a nerve issue etc... Good luck!

You know, honestly I can't remember now! I know it hurt for a while, but I do think there was some pain at two months. What's interesting about it to me now is that my tongue changes continually as far as appearance, how it feels, etc. This summer I was having problems tolerating anything super cold, which I expected, not so now. So I'd say it is continually improving. I did not have a lot of tongue removed, about 1/4. And then of course radiation.

Any pain I have now is really minor. I was told to watch for increasing pain/soreness, and ulcers that appear (of course!)

I think what you are describing sounds ok for this point. Check with your medical team if it gets worse, or worries you.
Best,
Anne

I hate how evasive doctors can be about recovery.

Its been almost 4 weeks since my surgery and I still have continuous pain. It feels like a mix of rice krispies popping inside the tip of my tongue and electrical shocks. My doctor says its shock from the trauma of the surgery and may last several more weeks.

I rate my pain usually about a 1/10 in the morning and after doing any talking or eating is rises to 4-5/10. The pain is ALWAYS worse at the end of the day. I cannot tolerate narcotics as they cause nausea and drop in blood pressure, so all I take now is Advil or Tylenol Muscle and Back Pain (Like Robaxacet) to ease it. My doctor recommended taking meds 1/2 hr before eating or any appts / phone calls where I will be doing a lot of talking.

Perhaps that is an option for you, to medicate near the end of the day (or before meals) prophylactically to minimize your discomfort later on? Just a thought...

Any pain I have is minor and usually in the morning due to stiffness (tongue is usually stuck kind of in the morning) I don't move it at night when I'm sleeping- plus I have a pretty dry mouth so I wake up with a stiff semi sore tongue.. Within about 5 minutes it's gone.. The nerves in it are regenerating so it's tingly at times. I never medicate - even at the worst pain - the week after rads - I used minimal pain meds - I'd have an oxy 5 ml - 30 minutes before I would chug my ensure - then sleep it off - I did this 4or 5 times a day for a week. The rest of the time a Tylenol # three occasionally would do. If you have to take meds your drs right take them before you have to do anything you know might hurt - before bed is also good if your having a lot of pain it may affect the quality of your sleep and you need sleep to heal. It sounds to me like a nerve issue though - and that can be tricky hopefully it's part of the healing and will fade - drs are o non committal sometimes it makes me crazy - they should just tell the truth... In my experience... But I really don't know... smile take care!
