I have received word this morning that I will undergo surgery this Friday. The decission has been made to go ahead with a partial glossectomy and a neck disection. Upon removing the tumor from my tongue it will be determined if a free flap reconstruction is needed. If needed I will receive a tracheotomy for as long as it is needed.
LOL, there are going to be a few surprises for me when I wake up on Friday and find out what has been done and what was deemed unnecessary.
I will let everyone know the results of things as soon as I return to my computer. Thanks to everyone who has offered advice and encouragment to me. I ask that you keep me in your prayers. You have been and will remain in mine.
Peace,
Fr. Mike

Mike, I am so glad the waiting is over for you. I have a suggestion. Make sure that whoever will be there with you when you come out of the anesthesia has a tablet and pen ready to hand to you. I, too, didn't know what the results would be and with a trach, couldn't talk, but I had a lot of questions, as I am sure you will. And if you wear glasses, make sure someone has those to give you right away. And don't worry -- you are going to be fine. Joanna | | |

The waiting is over and I'd think that alone is a bit of relief. We'll be thinking of you.

You may find some comfort hearing that the process of going into surgery for me was quite painless and I spent a lot of needless worry about that.
Take care

Mike, Mark made a very good point. Surgery was the easiest part of Heather's ordeal. You will do just fine. Comforting thoughts of healing and a speedy recovery are being sent your way. Good luck with the surgery. I too had the partial glossectomy and the rad neck diss. Not sure why the trach with the free flap reconstruction, they did the reconstruction on me but no trach. Tongue was a little stiff but by next day could be understood over the phone.
While not a piece of cake, as surgeries go, it's sounds a lot worse than it is. Please keep us posted. Bob S.
SCC Tongue, stage IV diagnosed Sept, 2002, 1st radical neck dissection left side in Sept, followed by RAD/Chemo. Discovered spread to right side nodes March 2003, second radical neck dissection April, followed by more RAD/Chemo.
