Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 1 | Six years ago or so I noticed a small white spot in my mouth and went to the doctor right away. They said no worries, no known cause, not contagious. I didn't worry too much as I was busy with aging parents and putting myself on the back burner. A couple months ago I decided it was time to go to the dentist after much delay and told him not to be alarmed by the white patch and told him what I had been told.
He was concerned, sent me to an oral surgeon, who said because of the location treatment might be tricky, and sent me to an ENT who wants to do some pretty scary surgery in my mouth (at least to me). This has been under biopsy twice and they are calling it dysplasia - squamous cell. Lucky for me, an acquaintance referred me to someone who encouraged me to get a second opinion and to come here for information and sharing.
I was concerned about such surgery for something that is 'not quite' cancer and am so happy for some direction. Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. From what you explained it sounds like there are 2 choices. You can either have surgery to remove this now or keep an eye on it watching for any changes. If you wait it could turn into cancer and it may be more difficult to treat. The advantage of having surgery now would be removing less tissue. You cant predict what will happen to the spot, maybe nothing. It is not an easy decision to make.

I'm waiting for her to describe the surgery her ENT told she needs. It's massive but I want her to describe it here for all of us. That's one of the reasons I referred her to Moffitt.
