Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 89 | Hello. The good news is I am an oral cancer - scc survivor! Question - has anyone tried registering as a bone marrow donor post oral cancer? Regarding medical eligibility post cancer the national bone marrow registry site states that "cured local skin cancer" survivors are eligible, if it is basal cell, squamous or insitu- melanoma. So is ORAL squamous cell (scc) considered medically the same as regular skin cancer? thanks! michelle (and yes, I have also asked this question at www.marrow.org)
History of leukoplakia <2001-2004. SCC lateral tongue 9/03; left radical neck dissection & hemiglosectomy 10/03, T2-3,N0M0; 28 IMRT radiation completed 12/03. 30 HBO dives Oct-Nov 04 for infections and bone necrosis -mandible.

Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 3,082 | Michelle It's moot for me since they reject everyone over 60. I've had skin cancer and I can attest it is not the same at all as oral cancer. Moreover their web site is very clear [quote]All other forms of cancer, including non-in situ melanoma, are not acceptable � no matter the length of time since treatment or recovery. [/quote] Here is link to Dana Faber that spells out the medical criteria a little more for bone marrow donations including height and weight restrictions bone marrow donations Sounds noble but I'd be surprised if they took you in light of some studies I googled showing marrow recipients getting cancer from donations from cancer patients.Just my opinion and since you asked them, you can share the response with us. Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 147 | I had been registered to be a bone marrow donor for about 10 years. About 6 months ago I received a routine email asking me to update my information. I did and of course included my DX and TX for SCC. Not long after I sent my response I received an email telling me that I was being removed from the donor registry. So from that - I assume that SCC prevents you from being a bone marrow donor.
DX 2/10/09; Stage 1 SCC side of tongue; Partial Gloss; PEG in 3/3/09; 3 Cisplatin; 35 IMRT; PEG out 7/17/09; Eating via mouth and walking 3 miles/day 4 wks after treatment end. 50 pound weight loss; Clear PET 09/09 and 09/10

CG to son, Paul (age 33, non-smoker) SCC Stage 2, Surgery 9/21/06, 1/6 tongue Rt.side removed, +48 lymph nodes neck. IMRTx28 completed 12/19/06. CT scan 7/8/10 Cancer-free! ("spot" on lung from scar tissue related to Pneumonia.)

SCC age 53 left tongue, floor of mouth, gums in 10/06, BOT 8/10. Never smoked, HPV-. Partial glossectomy 1/07. Additional tumors removed 3/07, 5/08 and 6/08. Surgery 8/09 w/graft. Cisplatin, Erbitux, Taxotere 1/10 Erbitux & radiation 4/10. Esophogeal stricture 8/12.

Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 571 | Transplant patients are given drugs to make sure they don't reject the donor tissue. The drugs suppress their immune system. What a normally healthy person might be able to fight off with their immune system, a transplant recipient has a much more difficult time. Their immune system isn't sufficient to handle cancer or it's treatment.
It is noble to be a tissue donor whether alive or posthumously. Bless you for wanting to help.
Ex-spouse MISDIAGNOSED with SCC-HN IVa 12/10. Tonsils out 1/11. 4 teeth out 2/11. TX Erbitux x2, IMRT x2 2/11. 2nd opinion-benign BCC-NOT CANCER 3/11. TX stopped 3/11. New doctors 4/11. ENT agrees with 2nd opinion 5/11. ENT scoped him-all clear 7/11. Ordered MRI anyway. MRI 8/22/11 Result-all clear.
