Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 8 | OK, where do I begin? Spouse of 24 years recently diagnoised with Squamous Cell Carcinoma at the age of 52. non Smoker. Preliminary results from ENT doctor, T2N1M?. We are scheduled for Laryngoscopy and Esophagoscopy Rigid or flexible biopsy on Thursday, 2/17. Oncologist appt on Monday followed by radiation consultation the following Thursday.
Just found this site last week and have begun reading all the posts.
Dr said the biospy exam/surgery will last about 30 minutes and then he will be able to tell me more on what he sees. No PET yet, the radiation doctor wants to order the test.

It's good that your husband has a biopsy scheduled so that you can know for sure what is happening. Make a list of all your questions so that you can get them answered when you see the doctor. You could start from the main page of OCF with information on diagnosis at: http://oralcancerfoundation.org/diagnosis/index.htm - or any other links that can help you get your questions together. And until Thursday, try to keep busy so you don't start thinking too much about the whys and what-ifs but more about the very possible good outcomes that come with surviving oral cancer. We'll be thinking about you. Do let us know what is happening.

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 5,260 | Welcome to our family and the best of everything to you. The best advice I have for right now is to keep your mind occupied on your everyday normal life. Yes it is hard to do that but try your best. We get to the point where we dwell on OC and what might be going on with us. Wait until the test are over before reaching any conclusions. It isn't OC until the biopsies say it is.
Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

CG/Mom: 5 1/2 years SCC upper palate,4 recurrences, surgeries, chemo & radiation. Mom went to Heaven 1/21/11.

It is normal to be nervous about your Thursday appointment.
You need to make sure that someone is with you for support and to take notes and as Anne-Marie says have a list of all your questions.
If there is something that you are told that you do not understand make sure you get it explained to you until you do.
I did not find this site until a year after my first appointment and remember I just nodding my head even when I did not know what was being said and blindly accepted what was in front of me.
This is no time to be shy which is the normal effect that professional people have on most of us.

bx Jan 2012 Hyperkeratosis-Epithelial Dysplasia
24cm GIST tumour removed 8/2013. Indefinite Oral Chemo.

We even have a couple medical professionals around here from time to time. Make use of the search function on both the forum and also the main OCF pages.
You have been given good advice by everyone. Especially Gabe who said to make sure you understand what they are telling you. Remember the doc works for you! Is your husband being seen at a cancer center? Are they familiar with these types of cancer? How many do they see per month/per year? These are some good questions to ask on your appointment. Some people tape record their doctor sessions. Thats a very good idea cuz most of us tend to go a little numb when talking about cancer. Its also a very good idea for you to accompany your husband to all of his doctor visits. Men tend to clam up and then complain to their wives instead of their doctors.
If you have questions just ask, we are here to help you. Best wishes with your husbands upcoming appointment.

Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 49 Likes: 1 | Welcome and I have recently been diagnosed myself...Jan. 24, 2011 I got the news. I have yet to begin treatments. Port going in on Friday and then chemo and radiation begins on Monday. 3 rounds of cisplatin and 7 weeks of radiation.I don't know about any surgery at this juncture but I am not forgetting about that as a possibility. It is just not possible due to the location of the SCC.
I think you have found the very best place to get good info. from those that have been through and have experienced a variety of situations through their treatments.
Where is your husband being treated?
