Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 7 | Both ENT Doc's I have been to recommend surgery immediatley before any chemo is done. I have read where chemo can be done first to shrink the tumor (mine is stage 4 tumor on left side of tongue) possibly saving more of the tongue. I have been told the tumor has really grown too large for chemo to help and I would like to hear if others have gone different ways on which they did first. I should mention the tumor is bad enough I can hardly speak and don't want to eat so I don't have much time to mess around with this thing. My reconstruction ENT has done hundreds of these with good success so I feel pretty confident I'm getting back about the most I can as far as speech and eating go.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 6 | Radiation is what shrinks tumors. When chemo is used with the radiation it gives the radiation and extra boost. Chemo alone does not work on OC.

Please do yourself a huge favor and seek another opinion from a CCC ASAP. Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 5,260 | Kent, I had surgeries 1st and if I knew then how this would be, I would have had the rads and chemo 1st to see if it would have helped. I listened to the wrong Dr.
Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

I've had 2 opinions from ENT's and both recommended the surgery first and I was curious if anyone had gone with radiation first or even it it's ever recommendned. With the way this thing is feeling in my mouth I'm not sure how much time I have left to mess with this thing. I will check on a CCC and see if I can get in. Is the experience much different at a CCC?

There is a case of a chef in Chicago (anybody?) who was on Oprah. He was advised to have the surgery you are having but kept looking for alternatives. He was eventualy treated at a CCC (I Think)without the surgery and is doing well.

Sounds as though your diagnosis is very similar to mine and I have no regrets about having surgery first. My tumor went deep into my tongue, all the way to the back and I had extracapsular spread from one lymph node, putting me squarely in Stage IV. Removing the cancer from my body as quickly as possible and following that up with the radiation/chemo combination has worked for me so far (almost 2-years).

I totally agree with David...get yourself to a CCC right away! The team of Doctors at a CCC are the BEST. And you want the best people treating you, this is your life we're talking about!
