I've noticed that the fluoride tray treatments that I do for 10-20 minutes every day cause my teeth to be very white and bright immediately after the treatments. But then, within 1/2 hour, my teeth look dark and dingy the rest of the day. My teeth were never that dark before I started the fluoride. My rad doc did inform me, however, that my teeth would stain from the treatments, so I am not shocked by it. I just don't feel like I have a nice smile anymore and was wondering.......Is it safe to have teeth whitening done either with trays or lazer whitening after radiation treatments to the head and neck? If so, are there any negative side effects from whitening? Thanks! grin

David,
I'm using Colgate Gel-Kam with 0.4% Stable Stannous Fluoride which is prescribed by my dentist. Fruit & Berry flavor.
Why do you ask?

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the humorous reply. How DO you stay in such good spirits after all you've been through!? You say your teeth got so white they disappeared. Do you mean from fluoride treatments? Or are you joking there?
Anyway, what do you mean by the doctor said that was a no no?

I believe others using Stannous Fluoride have also complained about temp staining.

x..007,
I had the same problem and they switched me from Stannous to Sodium Fluoride. After switching I have had no more problems with stained teeth.

There are numerous brands available, so ask you dentist, but as a reference I am using a 1.1% Sodium Fluoride product called Neutra Maxx 5000 Gel.

I am joking . LOL They pulled every tooth I had for the rads, chemo and rad seed implants. I am not allowed to get any dentures becase of exposed dead bone on my lower jaw on both sides. I am tempted but after I think about it I decide I don't need any more pain or problems. You need a more femine number that 007 LOL lets go for 008 because it has a curvy boby in the right places.

Eileen,

Get a prescription from your dentist. He wrote mine for 100 refills and each tube lasts a month or so so I won't need another one for some time. Mine is Cypress Sodium 1.1 and I have never had any problems at all with it.

Eileen,
I my case there is a dental group at the medical complex that the Cancer Center is part of.

All OC patients are automatically patients of the dental group from DX through TX.

So, I just have to walk in and buy the stuff as I need it. It is $12 for a 4.3 oz bottle of gel.

I think you can buy it over the internet without a RX.

David,
Is Cypress Sodium 1.1 just a different brand than what Don was talking about above? If so what are the benefits/differences between the two kinds?

Yes there are many brands out there. Cypress is cheap, that's why I use it.

David,
Are you talking about the gel that goes in the trays? Or are you talking about just the tooth paste?
