Joined: May 2009 Posts: 1,412 | How can you tell if what you are swalloing is actually getting to your stomach or not? I have been trying to sip water because I am so craving it right now. I do not want to cause any mroe damage, so is there anyway to tell that the water is going down the right way? Would I be able to notice that it was going down the wrong way?

I think if it weren't going down the right way, you would start coughing and choking and would know. You're probably doing okay.

Julieann Nov 2007 SCC on right tonsil following tonsillectomy. Was smoker, QUIT. (Stage IV T2 N2b) 7 weeks radiation one day/wk chemo (carboplatin and 5-FU). Allergic to Taxol; PEG in, lost 30 lbs. Coughing, spluttering and nearly choking are signs that things are not going down the right way. It can take a while to get things moving properly after treatments, so take it slow.

Actually for one that had EVERY problem one can have DURING the Tx I think you are doing better than most immediately post Tx so congrats on that front and yes you would know in a second if it went down the "wrong" way.

Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Yep, you are swallowing the water. "silent aspiration" is very rare and it's when you do swallow the wrong way but without coughing etc - unfortunately I had that but the very first MBS in the hospital identified it. Even so, water alone will not cause any problem, it's when food gets aspirated. See my other reply to you on EricS' thread.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 5,260 | No comment on ths one, The others gave you great answers . You would probably hear a splashing sound when you moved if it went the wrong way.
Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.
