Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 5,260 | I had an appt today and the Dr wants me to try the driving so much, He grees that it is a lot to do when you are driving in Pittsburgh. One of my friends in church said he would give me $100 towards gasoline and the Pastor said the church would help too. So I guess the launch is scheduled for go. 1st the interview and physical thursday tho.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 6 | Jim, do you think that you could round up some friends from church to maybe drive a few days a week? Even if you could cover every other day, that would help you with the trip.
Think about it this way....6 friends each take can one day every other week. Then you would only need to drive yourself 2 days per week.

Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,844 | An idea as well is to contact churches local to the area where you are having your treatment to see if they can arrange room/board within their congregation. Just a thought or if your pastor or church friends may be able to help there.
The hospital that I did both rads/chemo and hbo had a house set aside for cancer patients and families to stay in free of charge, I had half the distance to drive that you do and I just couldn't do it everyday.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 5,260 | Thank you for the ideas Christine and Eric, I will check them out. I have a problem letting someone else drive, but I can relent for a few weeks. LOL I just feel much safer with me behind the wheel as I have for well over 1 million miles plus. Accident free too.

I've been following your progress and all the things you have been through and are still going through and I am truly amazed at your attitude and persistence, if I lived closer I would drive you and be your caretaker. Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 5,260 | Bonniey, just from the way you talk and express things, I would let you drive me too part of the time. But I do have to say this, I have always enjoyed driving. To me it is relaxing and I also try to anticipate some of the knot heads on the highway , truck drivers and all.

DIAGNOSIS: 6/26/07 SCC right tonsil/BOT T4N0M0
TREATMENT START: 8/9/07 cisplatin/taxol X 7..IMRT twice daily X 31.5.
TREATMENT END: 10/1/07
PEG OUT: 1/08
PORT OUT: 4/09
FOLLOWUP: Now only annual exams. ALL CLEAR!

I can't believe that the nearest HBO chamber is a hundred miles way and if it really is, driving it daily is insane. That's an hour an a half each way with no traffic. If nothing else, your back will kill you. Try to find a place to stay. Maybe the American Cancer Society can help you find a place to stay or help with payments. The cost of gas and ware and tear on the car, not to mention the body, has to warrent staying over. please investigate it.
