I am normaly an outdoor/fishing enthusiast and like to read material on those subjects. Now I'm looking for a book on cancer the a backwoods hillbilly such as myself can read, understand and enjoy.
I purchased Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips by Kriss Carr and Anti Cancer by David Servan-Schreiber this morn.
Anybody got any other suggestions.
Thanks Josh

One of my suppliers gave me a book called "100 Questions and Answers about Head and Neck Cancers" edited by Elise Carper, Kenneth Hu, Elena Kuzin.
I gave it to Alex who's response via email to me was
Am reading your book 100 questions......Excellent, I wish that, a) It was available to us; b)I had it earlier. c) I wasn't so far gone that I could understand it. Much better than the pamphlets put out by our mob. OC in a easy to read book c/w with sage advice
the email isn't so easy to understand as Alex was suffering terribly from chemo side effects (confusion, concentration issues and memory loss from one minute to the next) but you get the gist
It is a book divided into issues faced by OC patients/survivors and their response. It has been vetted by healthcare professionals to ensure accuracy of the information.
We were so impressed with the book that we gave 2 copies to our Cancer Co-ordinator to pass on to newly diagnosed patients.
In Alex's befuddled state, it still only took him less than 24 hours to read

My all time favorite is Cancer Made Me a Shallower Person by Miriam Engleberg. It's a memoir in comics and although the author died of her breast cancer, it still makes me laugh. One of the first things that many people lose to cancer is their sense of humor - which is so sad. Cancer takes so much from us that we cannot help, but humor and the ability to laugh despite tragedy does not have to be one. Order it thru OCF amazon link. He's done so much for cancer patients and, at least imho, is getting railroaded by people out to crucify him.
The Pulitzer prize-winning "The Emperor of All Maladies" is fantastic. But not the easiest read.
Best of luck with your treatment!

No cancer patient, and no Tour de France Winner would ever give up fighting when faced with an obstacle or two. So I don't get it.
I do know that his organization has done tremendous work with and for cancer patients. Those of us who believed in him, bought his books, donated, and were inspired by him, just hope we weren't doing these things because we were naively believing in the Easter Bunny.

It is rather clinical--not sure it would be a good fishing companion--but it has a lot of helpful info about types of OC, treatment, coping with treatment, etc. It has a lot in one place if you want something more clinical.

I do know that he has undergone some 500+ drug tests over his racing career that have all come out negative. Also that 10 or so ex-teammates have said that they'd been with him when he took performance-enhancing drugs.
I have heard the "he'd fight it if he were truly innocent" defense from several knowledgeable people and, while there is certainly truth to it, I do not automatically assume that any person, TDF winner, cancer patient or neither, would take on an extremely lengthy and costly defense of potentially trumped-up charges with no guarantees at the end.
This isn't what I'd call "an obstacle or two." From what I've heard it could cost millions to try and "clear his name" (money which presumably he has), to say nothing of up to 5 years in court. I for one would think long and hard about heading into that particular buzzsaw. With young children and life after all being finite, do I really want to spend the next 5 years of my life in a courtroom?
Then there's the reality of the World Anti-Doping Agency itself, an organization that makes its own rules and has a history of dodgy test results. Athletes who choose to fight their potentially spurious findings have no recourse but to go to arbitration... and guess who sets the terms and the rules?
All of which is to say that I don't think there are any quick answers here. But it's surely a topic worthy of discussion!
