Joined: May 2009 Posts: 1,413 Likes: 1 | well, that time has come to go back to teaching the little buggers I am excited, but nervous at the same time. Tomorrow will be my first day back. I will have three days of work and then spring break. We are going to San Antonio for break and are taking a train. I am really nervous about going back to work tomorrow. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers that I make it through the day.

David R. 65 yr old male non-smoker, light drinker, stage 3 or 4, depending on which doc you ask, scc rt. tonsil, 2 nodes, 7 weeks radiation and chemo. No surgery. Teatment ended 3/20/08. PET scan 8/08 showed no cancer.
And now, as of oct, 2010, caregiver to wife, Linda, with breast cancer.
May, 2013, Linda diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. Enuf already.

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

Caregiver to husband Ron. Throat Cancer. Finished 35 radiation treatments on 11/21/04. 8/2/11 small lesion on lower gum, laser Procedure to remove. 3/6/12 Doc. removed another lesion on outside of his neck. Did a skin graft from his chest to replace the skin on his neck. Went to Heaven on 6/24/12.

Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,357 Likes: 5 | I am sure your kids will be wonderful and very happy to have you back. Thank God you have been a teacher before and know that their directness is innocent. They do not judge how one looks or speaks - oh but if we all had the innocence of childhood!
I am glad you are well enough to go back, but please be kind to yourself and get LOTS of rest. Use every opportunity to catch that 5 minute nap. Others will want to help - let them!
Definitely being with your students will not leave you time to think of your own situation and that is usually a good thing. Proud of you for getting through all of this and now you are back to the normal stream of life. Well done!! You are amazing.

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 493 | Good luck! I was so happy when I was able to go back to work full time. Just be sure that you get enough rest. I am the library director in our town, and my community has been so supportive of me. I have felt enveloped in their love and understanding.
Female, nonsmoker, 70, diag. 5/09 after tongue biopsy: stage IV. Left hemi-gloss. and left selec. neck disec. 30 lymph nodes removed May 20. Over 7 weeks daily rads. with three chemo. PEG removed 12/4/09 Am eating mostly soft foods. Back to work 11/09 Retired 4/1/11. 7 clear scans! Port out 9/11. 2/13. It's back: base of tongue, very invasive
surgery involving lifestyle changes. 2/14: Now speaking w/Passey-Muir valve. Considering a swallow study. Grateful to be alive.
