Hello,

Starting this Wed, Pepsi will be accepting submissions for their Refresh Everything Campaign. They will take submissions 1/13 until 1/24 for campaigns that will impact the America. On Feb 1st, voting will begin on each project and at the end of every month Pepsi will award deserving organizations grant money. (10) $5k, (10) $25k, (10) $50k, and (2) $250k grants will be awarded every month.

In order to apply we must come up with a specific campaign that will impact the public in a large way and make a tangible difference. We must also decide how much money we will need in order to fulfill our mission.

Heres the idea: A public service announcement commercial that will air on a basic cable station for a duration of one week urging the public to ask for an oral cancer screening at their next visit to the dentist. In order to meet this goal we will need to apply for the $250k grant. We must also come up with a catchy name for our campaign. This is where I would like your help, below are four that I came up with. Id love to hear your thoughts if you like any of them or ideas of your own.

Turning frowns upside down campaign
No smile left out campaign
A screening a year keeps oral cancer away campaign
Keep America smiling campaign

Feel free to spread this around! I will be working on the additional necessary components from now til Wed so that we will be able to submit our campaign first thing wed morning. Once submitted we will be able to spread our campaign virally out to the www getting as many people to vote as possible.

Thanks for your help!

Megan

Hi -
Do the folks that fix cleft palates use "smile" in their campaigns? Seems I recall they do.

imo - some of these sound like campaigns for healthy teeth or toothpaste, but I can't think of anything better.

Maybe something along the line of what a dentist would say:

Open Wide: Fight Oral Cancer!

That's all I can come up with.

Shine the light on oral cancer, I like that! The ones I listed above aren't necessarily the best, just thought of those on the spur to get the ball rolling. I'd love to hear more suggestions as well!

ooooohhh marketing, I love it. Since television is a visual medium the most effective way to stimulate a response is in the images and not necessarily the slogan.

One of the most successful PSA's in history is the "This is your brain on drugs" campaign...actually made Rachel Leigh Cook famous.

Concept: (Image of a normal face) "This is your face"

(Image of disfigured face after OC) "This is your face after Oral Cancer"

"Ask for an oral cancer screening on your next visit to the dentist."

I can provide before and after pictures if needed, I was a handsome guy before cancer and a trainwreck after.

Eric, that is very powerful, I do like that. You are so right, images last forever. No one really knows what oral cancer can do to your face, or just normal living.

My brother lost his ability to speak, and only used an erase board. I can see him writing something on it "Don't let this happen to you, get an oral cancer screening today"

Thanks Susan. I'm actually in "marketing mode" as I just finished a marketing plan and AD campaign for a regional credit union. Since being knocked out of work by OC I spend my time consulting through my own consulting business, specializing in Marketing among other things.

I love your idea with the dry erase board.

All of these ideas are great! Here are my thoughts, which intertwine with those already expressed:

AD MESSAGE: (Keep it simple)
_____________________________________________________________
Whether oral cancer is caused by smoking, HPV or factors unknown, the key to successful treatment and long-term survival is EARLY DETECTION.
EARLY DETECTION is achieved through a simple, EASY TEST done by your dentist.
This test may SAVE YOUR LIFE!

SLOGAN SUGGESTIONS: (follow each with,"Ask your dentist!")
_____________________________________________________________
EASY TEST => EARLY DETECTION => SAVE YOUR LIFE!

Stick your tongue out, save your life!

Detection can be easy, Treatment is not!

There is a banner that I use when I do Oral Cancer Screenings that I got from Brian. You could ask him where the slogan came from, but here is what it says:

"IS A KILLER HIDING RIGHT UNDER YOUR NOSE"

"A painless 3 minute exam can save your life"

I think it says it all.

You didn't give any details as to what will be done if we get this opportunity, but as a dentist and oral cancer survivor, you can count on me to pitch in, in any way that you might think I could help.

Thanks Eric. It was the saddest thing to see him writing everything down and couldn't get it down fast enough. It is just an image I will remember always. I do think images are powerful, just as Christine said. It hits home and hopefully shakes people up.

Thank you all for your great ideas! For those interested in finding out more about this campaign you can do so on the main website here: http://www.refresheverything.com/

I will submit the request for OCF's grant tomorrow and shortly after, the polls will open and voting will begin. Again, we are applying for a $250,000 grant from Pepsi and our specific project will be a PSA campaign. Once granted the $250,000 OCF plans to create a captivating commercial that will air nationwide informing the public the importance of oral cancer screenings. (This could be the beginning of a national program for opportunistic screenings which would yield early discovery by medical and dental professionals.)

BUT- this is all optimistic thinking at this point of time. Our main focus within the next month will have to be on getting as many people as possible to vote for our campaign! We did it in the past with the Cancer Fighter's Award and we can do it again! It will be great to have a team of volunteers dedicated to getting as many supporters to vote on OCF's campaign as possible- via social networking, email, phone calls, etc. If anyone's interested please shoot me an email! [email protected]

I will keep you all posted as to when OCF's campaign airs live on the Pepsi website!

Thank you all for your help!

This would make a great commercial...

The combo of these two....Oral Cancer is a hard disease to swallow and Detection can be easy, treatment is not would get some attention.

Set that to music showing pictures of people before and after like the sad commercials for the abused animals and you would have a winner!!!!

Some footage of a patient having their head and shoulders bolted down under the mask on the radiotherapy table before a treatment would make for some confronting viewing. That would make anyone sit up in their chair and get their attention.

Great idea Karen.
Also one in the hospital with the many tubes connected. Plus having to write on a board due to not being able to speak due to the trach.
A nurse sucking the mucus from the track site also..can still remember the sound!!!

Ooohhhh my goodness yeah, the horrible trache and the suction machine.... that sound used to haunt me. I still have the occasional nightmare about that and probably will for the rest of my second life. My trache blocked up about a week after my first surgery and I had a cardiac arrest. I left this planet for a while and was brought back to life by an IC doctor David and his trusty machine!!!!

I actually have footage of me being bolted down on the radiation table with my mask. I also have footage of me 2 weeks post op from the mandiblectomy/flap/nd...it's pretty shocking as how swollen and the incisions etc..hard to look at for me. Was going to forward it on to Megan with before and after pics but couldn't get it to upload to my mail server.

OCF's grant proposal has been approved by Pepsi!!

Now its up to us to get the MOST votes to see that this happens! Starting today (Feb 1) through the end of the month (Feb 28th), everyone will get a chance to vote everyday for this grant. So that means you can vote on OCF's grant once everyday for the entire month. As of this morning we were ranked 76th, and we need to be in the top 2 to win the grant.

Here's the link:
http://www.refresheverything.com/oralcancerfoundation#

There's several ways to vote:
1. Sign in with your facebook email & password
2. Dont have facebook? You can sign in as a new user with your email
**You can vote once a day per email address.

PLEASE spread this around to as many people as possible! If we win this grant it will be HUGE for OCF and will be the start to see the death rate of oral cancer decrease.

Just a side note- We chose a different message to spread than the "before and after" oral cancer photos. I know that we can all agree that seeing the effects of oral cancer sends a shocking message. However, from our experience- most tend to turn their heads away from shocking images like that. It may be reality- but most people do not want to accept that reality. The only way they will spread a message is if it makes them feel good. Pepsi's campaigns, commercials, and marketing always take a positive approach leaving you feeling good about the message and wanting to pass it along to more people. In order for us to fit into Pepsi's goal is if we adapt our campaign to reflect their marketing strategy.

Once you click on the link above, you will see that OCF's campaign is taking a positive approach to share this message to the general public. We want people to know that its as simple as getting screened. But- it's your responsibility to make sure you're screened every year.

It's a hard disease to swallow, so speak out now to prevent oral cancer!

Thank you all for your help!

Be careful. The language on the Pepsi web site is confusing. At first blush, it seems like if you use a different email address, you can vote more than once a day for OCF. Actually while you "can" (physically able) vote multiple times with different email addresses, any one who does so RISKS HAVING ALL THEIR VOTES DISQUALIFIED. The site should be clearer in my opinion but when you read the official rules (how could I help but do so as a lawyer when clicking meant agreeing)you see that they mean person and email address to be one and the same.

Here is the official rule from Pepsi FORBIDDING USING MULTIPLE EMAIL ADDRESSES BY THE SAME PERSON
An individual can register on the Website as either a Participant or as a Voter but not both. If Sponsor determines, in its sole and absolute discretion, that any Participant or Voter has not complied with these Official Application Guidelines in any way, for example by registering more than one (1) time on the Website and/or using multiple e-mail addresses or other fraudulent means in an attempt to cast more than the ten (10) Votes allotted per day of each Voting Period or to allocate more than one (1) Vote per day to the same Application, then Sponsor reserves the right to cancel that Voter's or Participant's account, disqualify all their Votes and disqualify any Application that they have submitted and disallow any further participation by such individual in the Grant Program.
I voted and will vote each and every day.

Megan,

Thanks for including this in OCF's grant proposal submitted to Pepsi!!

At last, I feel like I have contributed something to OCF other than $$s.

I voted today, and will vote every day in February. It's on my calendar! Let's do this!

Thanks Charm- I took back my statement above. That was wrong and if we win this, I want it to be because we deserved it, not because we figured out how to get the most votes with multiple email addresses.

Thank you all for your dedication and support! We are ranked #21 this morning and only 21 days left to go. Its time to crack the whip!! If anyone has any original ideas to help us spread the word, I'd love to hear! Last week I sent out an email to everyone on the forum list which reaches over 6,000 emails. Friday- the OCF newsletter went out which reaches over 4,000 people. I've sent out emails to everyone (personal and work related) that I've ever emailed encouraging them to vote. My friends and family have done the same and I post the link on my facebook page everyday.

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE A FACEBOOK PROFILE- If you go to our pepsi refresh page today you will notice a button under "Promote this Idea" that says "Install the Application" this allows you to install the Pepsi Refresh application with the idea that you support onto your facebook page! I encourage you all to do this!

Ways to spread the word more:
- My local Starbucks has a bulletin board for businesses and community members to post flyers and cards. I'm going to create several flyers to spread around locally. I would love to email you all the flyer to post around in your work place, school, local grocery store, or where-ever! Please email me: [email protected] if you are interested.
